Story
UPDATE. 13/04/18
See here for press report from the clean. There was way more than we anticipated and def need extra to head over again as we bagged up what was left and left it to be picked up. https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/islands/1452352/mounds-of-plastic-cleared-from-mull-beach/
However with the costs we have a small shortfall. Total costs are £1470.69 + extra just giving fees. We raised £1260 on here and another donation. The extra is require to fund the 2nd run, cover the extra tools and bags (first lot were rubbish) and some extra dingy fuel. So to cover the 2nd hit to finish the job its about £200 ish. Then of course we'll just keep the fund going as there are loads of places that we could do with cleaning around the coast. Some closer to Oban. So to finish the job we need to get the total to ~£1500

Whilst on a tour to this amazing location to swim at the waterfall over Easter we noticed a terrible mess on the adjacent beach. This coastline has towering cliffs, amazing geology, waterfalls, wildlife and stunning natural beauty. It's completely inaccessible apart from by fast boat, with the nearest point being Oban.
Taking people to remote areas to see our stunning coastline, it was really horrific to see such an amazing place covered in crap. So we're gearing up to get a crew together to clean it up. However this isn't an ordinary beach clean this is a expedition beach clean!
It's about 50km/90min from Oban wth no land access and a very exposed rocky location so a tricky and costly place to get to. However we're organising all the logistics to get people there and back safely along with all the crap out!
So we need some cash to sort out getting people & junk back, along with some help with the clean up. Please help up with a small donation and if keen to join in then message us.
This is what we need!!
1) 16 volunteers to help with the mission - last minute. (Possibly this Monday 9th - weather depending). Volunteers need be prepared with warm clothes/waterproofs & strong shoes. We need to land via dingy onto a rocky/pebbly shore so people need to be fit and able to move about on this type of place, along with being able to carry bits and pieces back and forward to the dingys and then back out to the main boats.
We'd likely leave Oban around 9am and it wouldn't be returning till mid afternoon at earliest.
2) WEATHER!!! This is an exposed location which is why the junk has been focussed in there. It's 90min from Oban by RIB and can be dangerous landing & anchoring. So we need good weather to get there to start. (TBC!)
3) Transport - The location is remote with no land access. Two fast RIBS for passenger/junk transport to/from Oban. It's 90min by fast boat (20kts) and also exposed so need speed and comfort. (Sorted)
4) Two Dingys for people/junk transport to from shore (Sorted)
5) Oban Vehicles (pick up/vans) - move plastic to dump/recycling (need vehicles organised). Argyll&Bute council will send a van to pick up the rubbish on arrival back to Oban.
6) Confirmation A&B Council happy to accept junk (Sorted). Yay for A&B Council!
7) Monies - £740 for RIB transport (cover cost only basis - 2 x RIBS 11 & 9m one for passengers one for carrying junk) & some cover dingy engine fuel (£20). (plus the costs of this page which add up about £53.05ish). Then around £50 for tools, cutting devices, bags, gloves etc. This takes us to £850.
We also wish to have a further contingency of £360 to fund a further 2nd single boat trip. We may not be able to have enough space to carry all the debris back in one go from the first day. So it would be another 3 hour round trip on the day, or return back a second day to finish the job. If we are able to do it all in one hit then as below we'd use this to fund another clean at another beach within the same distance, or for the basking shark plastic survey below.
This crowd funding has to run 30 days at a minimum but we're not folk to hang about. We'll carry the can for doing it in sooner than that and hope we can get the cash together. Any surplus we'll donate over to the #planktonnotplastic campaign which is surveying basking shark food this summer for plastic contamination and to assess if the sharks are at risk from ingesting plastic.
Then if this campaign goes really well, maybe we can use the same model to clean other remote beaches and coastlines around the Inner Hebrides! Any other bad spots then let us know.
See below for video and images of the location.
