Story
Thank you for visiting my page. Please take a few minutes to read my story:
In summer 2019 I plan to travel to Kerala, South India to be a part of a Women’s Empowerment Project, which focuses on the rights and equality of women and girls in developing societies. This is something that's important to me as a woman living in a well-developed society. The programme is run by GVI (Global Vision International), a family-run organisation which contributes to making long term, sustainable contributions towards key global and local issues.
I am aiming to fund the majority of my volunteering trip with money I have been saving and will continue to save from working all available shifts at my part-time job alongside my university studies. I have therefore created this page to hopefully fund the remaining £600, less than half of my overall needed funds.
Any donation would be highly appreciated if anyone wishes to help me along the way!
Why am I going?
With two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population being female and countless female children not receiving a basic education, supporting women in developing countries is vital to helping overcome critical social issues such as poverty and unemployment.
Girls and women in India face gender discrimination at every stage of their life, starting even before they are born. Women still play a role in society that is heavily focused on their home, husband and children. Women are predominately employed in vulnerable jobs, which lack protection laws, earning less money than their male counterparts.
Sexual and domestic violence against women is still on the increase, despite the existence of legislation for both. In 2009, 89,546 cases of cruelty by husband or relative and 21,397 cases of rape were reported to the National Crimes Records Bureau of India.
My aim is to support these women and girls by helping them overcome these issues that they face every day. Alongside this I hope to develop further knowledge and life skills.
What will I be doing to help ?
-I will be providing education on literacy, rights and life skills
-I will be providing workshops on skills for generating income
-I will be providing courses on women’s health and sexual health
-I will be providing educational support to young girls in local schools and communities
By giving women access to the same local resources as men such as an education, we can increase the income threshold per household, empower women to become more financially independent and help them to achieve their personal and professional goals
Young girls will be given a head start in education, hopefully leading to a brighter future and all women will be made aware of their rights
Through GVI’s health care initiatives, we can educate local women in general and family health care, thereby helping to reduce infant and child mortality rates and create healthier families
THANK YOU!
