Story

David Fernie, Graeme Mackay, Grant McMahon and Keith Sturton will play 72 holes of golf in one day to support the Fernie family in their wish to setup a foundation which will help continue Raymond’s legacy & support the development of youth employability in Fife.

Raymond was 58 when he lost his eight year battle against prostate cancer on 1st March this year. Despite the troubles with his health, Raymond worked tirelessly with schools and the business community across Fife promoting and supporting youth employability.

Countless pupils credit Raymond as pivotal in achieving their dream jobs through his work setting up an employability initiative at Lochgelly High. He ran workshops and connected employers with the school to make sure employability skills were part of the curriculum. He then took this blueprint to his role as Developing the Young Workforce manager working across Fife. His model has become a template for councils across Scotland.

Raymond had a vision and we, alongside Raymond’s family, friends and colleagues, want to keep that legacy going. The challenge means we will walk for over 20 miles taking around 14 hours. It is a big challenge, but it will also be a privilege to help raise funds to support Raymond’s vision of supporting more youngsters in Fife finding a start into the workplace.

Bob Garmory, Chair of DYW Fife and Director of the Purvis Group, said:

"I had the privilege of working alongside Ray Fernie for 7 years on employability programmes destined to give every young person the best possible start in their working life. His enthusiasm for the cause knew no bounds and he was always prepared to do whatever he could to ensure that all the young people he came into contact with maximised the use of their talents no matter their circumstances. His legacy will live on but I know that with the help of the Foundation that his family and friends are setting up in his name, that young people will benefit in a tangible way for many years to come".
