Story
Alan Caig, Chair of the Friends of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter is running the Great West Run, a half-marathon, on October 14th to raise funds to buy and display The Dawlish Hoard, discovered by metal-detectorists in 2017, after being buried for about 3,000 years.
The hoard is a unique find for Britain as it consists of both Late Bronze Age gold bracelets and pieces of bronze ingot and scrap weapons.
It consists of four gold bracelets, each deliberately folded up. There are also seven fragments of bronze ingot, two fragments of axe and a section of bronze sword.
Similar gold bracelets to these have been found in Colaton Ralegh (on display in RAMM), Tisbury (on display in Salisbury) and Morvah (in the British Museum). A mixture of gold and bronze objects though, is sofar unique.
In order to secure the unique Dawlish Hoard for RAMM’s visitors, we need to raise £6,500 to purchase the treasure and a further £2,000 for conservation and interpretation. Alan's run is part of a bigger effort to raise the funds.
