Story

Hello, we are the Wythenshawe District Nurses.

We are raising money for our lovely collegue and friend, Paula, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in March 2021. Paula has been undergoing chemotherapy for over a year. When she was diagnosed, Christie’s found a rare condition (DPD deficiency, where she has an inability to detoxify) through her blood tests and was told she would only be able to cope with 50% strength of chemotherapy. Her first round of chemo completely floored her as it started attacking her bone marrow and white blood cells therefore that round of treatment had to be cut short, the doctors tweaked the chemo and Paula was managing exceptionally well, still really fatigued but constantly fighting.

Fast forward to November 2021 she went for scans where she was told she was responding really well and that the tumour had shrunk, however Paula was still on the borderline for being able to have an operation to remove the tumour. In January 2022, Paula met with the surgeon to discuss the operation and the risks that came with it, the surgeon needed more scans to confirm her cancer treatment was still working to determine if she could press on with the operation but the results came back that the tumour had now grown and they suspect has also spread to the liver, so the chemo had stopped working and she is now sadly inoperable.

We need to raise money to get Paula to a cancer clinic in Germany which specialises in personalised treatment. She would undergo intense treatment over 21 days where they are hopeful they can kill all the cancer cells. Paula is sadly running out of treatments being offered to her in the UK due to the complexity of where her tumour is. Paulas family have been sent the quote from the private clinic and would like to get the ball rolling with it asap. Paulas job involves looking after others and improving the quality to other peoples lives, day in, day out. Now its time for us to help Paula.

Paula is only 53 years young, has 3 beautiful grandchildren and one on the way but most of all she has so much left to give, so much still to do, she’s still so young and really deserves to have a proper chance at saying ‘I beat cancer’.

As a team, will be completing a sponosred walk on 23/04. We will be walking 10 miles around Malham Circuit. Any sponsor ship, no matter how big or small, will help increase Paulas chances of receiving the treatment she so desperately needs and truly deserves.

Thank you,
