Story
Building Lives Full of Wonder!
The importance and value of reading is widely acknowledged yet books are a rare luxury in many Serbian children’s homes, especially in rural communities. Prosledi Knjigu (Pass The Book!) aims to give these children access to books that will fire their imagination, inspire confidence and encourage ambition as well as igniting a lifelong love of reading.
The project is essentially a mobile library for small village schools with no libraries and few resources. Each school is given a ‘Box of Wonderful Books’, the contents having been vetted and approved by one of Serbia’s foremost children’s librarians. Each quarter, the boxes move to a new school, ensuring that the books get wide usage and the children continually have new literary worlds to explore.
As of March 2020 we have welcomed 13 schools to the project. The teachers are reporting that the children's vocabulary starts to improve within 3 months of the first box arriving.
Now we have our sights on more village schools in the next country -Gornji Milanovac. We're talking to 7 village schools about taking part and need to buy another 400 books, plus wooden boxes, reading diaries and prizes for the best little readers in each school.
Every donation, however small, has the potential to change a young life! Thank you

6 years agoDear supporters, we are now through the trial phase and the boxes have been circulated to new schools. All the participating schools were supplied with 'participation diplomas' for the children and a winning diarist from each school was decided. These winners all had a wonderful day out in Belgrade (pics on our FB page). We are now moving ahead with (up to) 6 more rural schools in Pozega, as well as trying to recruit volunteers to implement the scheme in other regions. Let us know if you have any suggestions/contacts pls. Thank you all!

6 years agoWe are 2 months into the trial and it's all good news :) Reports from the teachers in all six schools are very encouraging. With only a few exceptions, the children are actively reading and recommending books to each other. The activity rate is high and in fact we are considering changing the boxes around early! The teachers are optimistic too and find that the logging system works easily. I'm thrilled to say that one teacher, in Visibaba ('snowdrop') village says that she's noticed the children's vocabulary improving already.

6 years agoHello everyone. As you’ve probably seen from the Facebook page we had a fantastic launch at 6 schools despite heavy snow. If you’ve not visited the page, please do - some of the videos will warm your heart! (Www.facebook.com/proslediknjigu). Also, we’ve had some stonking coverage which is a great motivator for all concerned - parents, teachers, kids, team and hopefully, future donors too 😉 School was due to start tomorrow but has been delayed a week due to the flu outbreak. I’ll post a new report after speaking to all the teachers soon.
