Iʼve raised £371 to Pakistan 2022 Floods: The Worst Humanitarian Crisis In The World. Urgent Aid Needed For Families With No Food, Clean Water And Medication

    Story

Urgent relief is needed to families affected by the 2022 Pakistan floods who have no access to food, clean water and medication. ALL FUNDS RAISED WILL BE DISTRIBUTED DIRECTLY TO FAMILIES.

We have trusted apolitical social workers on the ground who are able to bypass political and bureaucratic NGOs to provide aid directly to the worst affected families. Families need money, rather than rationing bags, so that they are able to prioritise and buy their most urgent essentials.

"Put your hand up if you haven't eaten in the last 24 hours". The 10 families surviving on the roof of their school all raise their hands, from mothers cradling their babies to young children. "Raise your hand if you are unwell and sick". Barrages of young children raise their hand, we feel the forehead of a young mother who has an exorbitant fever - the first symptoms of malaria.

The 2022 Pakistan floods is the worst humanitarian crisis occurring in the world right now due to climate change (experiencing 200% more rain in its 30 year average): 33 million people are affected, 660,000 internally displaced, 13,000 injured and 1400 official deaths. This is only getting worse with the stagnant floodwater estimated to take 8-10 months to evaporate, a breeding ground for malaria, dengue and diarrhoea. Farmers (the majority affected) will have no income for the next year and their families are dying of malnutrition and disease. We, the west, are the worst contributors of greenhouse gasses (whilst Pakistan contributes 0.5% globally) and yet fail to provide help to these vulnerable people

My friend (and journalist) Omar Hamed Beato and I have stayed in the worst affected area of Sindh, we have seen first-hand the devastation faced by families. In Sindh, 1.2 million people have been internally displaced, with most farmers having no income due to 12 million acres of agricultural land being flooded. The Pakistan government is failing to provide aid due to the 2023 general election and is expected to wait closer to the election to finally provide a trickle of aid to 'voters'. International NGOs are nowhere to be seen, not once have we seen the UN, Unicef, Save the Children or the World Food Programme. Thousands of families are living in self-made tents made of gathered sticks and cloth while they wait for aid, yet nothing arrives.

We visited Pakistan's Suprio Bund, a 50km flood-wall, being used as make-shift camps for thousands of displaced families. No government aid or international NGOs have been coming to these badly affected areas.

I asked a local [on the 6th October] when the last food drop was and he replied "[the] 16th of September". When asked when the next one was to arrive he dolefully replied "we don't know". Locals who have become become aid volunteers told us that families in the area "have not eaten in 9 days".

On top of this, we have seen that there is no access to clean water. Only 2 hand-pumps are used to supply thousands of families and this water is contaminated with water-borne diseases. Disease is now widespread with locals unable to afford medication to survive.

1.2 million have been nationally affected by malaria, dengue and diahorrea.

We met with the volunteer doctors in the area who have been forced to use their own money to buy medication due to lack of government and NGO aid. Locals cannot afford transport to hospitals or medication, I talked with Whaad Bux (70) who's sister died of hepatitis-A because they could no longer afford treatment with no income from crops. Furthermore, hospitals are overwhelmed and we have seen emergency wards with 2-3 on a bed waiting for urgent treatment - women are sitting helplessly with their children who are burning up with high fevers.

We have donated as much as we can in these areas, but 2 men cannot make a dent. With the cost of living I understand how hard it is to donate but for the price of a coffee, you can allow a few families to cross the borderline from death to survival - it is that serious. I appreciate your time and anything you can contribute! We will continue to donate wherever we can and will continue to raise awareness. Thank you!

I'm a freelance journalist, using my own funds, currently in Pakistan to raise awareness of the devastating floods due to Climate Change. I have seen on the ground how immediate funding is needed for these families due to the failure of government and NGO aid.
