Story

Recent events have highlighted the plight and often intersectional experiences lived by LGBTQ+ individuals in the Cayman Islands and more generally in the Caribbean, for which the non-profit 'Colours Cayman' provides much-needed and essential support. This is why, this LGBTQ+ History Month, the Oxford University LGBTQ+ Society calls on students to donate to this fundraiser which will, in full, go to Colours Cayman, the main local LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation.

Colours Cayman is a locally registered and operated non-profit that aims to foster a safe environment for the Cayman and wider Caribbean LGBTQ+ community by building a network of local businesses and public venues free of discrimination and harassment towards LGBTQ+ individuals. They also provide valuable networks and contacts for legal as well as non-legal support, and continuously advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality throughout the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean.

We will be hearing firsthand from the founder of Colours Cayman, Billie Bryan, at a Society event this month, with events and details to be confirmed shortly. Here, she will share further detail on the lived experiences and realities for LGBTQ+ people in Cayman, as well as the remaining work to secure LGBTQ+ rights and equality in the Caribbean.

Supporting this fundraiser would help Colours Cayman continue their invaluable local work, which has much impact on LGBTQ+ individuals directly affected by their government's policies, intent on denying them full rights and equality.
