Story

Outcry Witness is a free, anonymous platform dedicated to sexual assault survivors, who can store a record of the incidents so that they may have the choice to report it when they feel ready. The issue is current and very distressing:

- 5 in 6 rapes go unreported in the UK;

- Only 2 in 100 reported rapes, the most serious form of sexual assault, ends up in a charge in England and Wales. Two in one hundred;

- This means that 99% of rapists are walking free. This is not just a number, it represents the trauma and pain that survivors endure and have to live with.

- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 18 men has been raped or sexually assaulted in their adult life, sometimes more than once.

Sexual assault is a deeply traumatic, painful event, casting a shadow over survivors' lives for many years.

We need to do more to encourage survivors to report and seek justice. This starts with ensuring that the police are well trained and responsive to reports of sexual assault. Survivors need to feel safe and supported when they come forward, and they need to trust that their cases will be taken seriously.

We also need to tackle the social stigma around sexual assault. Survivors often face victim-blaming and scepticism when they report, which can be incredibly traumatic and discouraging. We need to create a culture where survivors are believed, supported, and empowered. Ending sexual assault and rape requires a multifaceted approach.

Three-quarters of survivors of sexual violence told a survey their mental health worsened because of how the police investigated their report. Some said the perpetrator continued to harm them because police did not take their report seriously; others wished they had never contacted the police.

The above is from the BBC.

Every single one of us has a story regarding sexual assault, whether a small incident or a devastating one. We are working on giving survivors more options, in their own time, so that these terrible statistics start changing.

Outcry Witness is a free, completely anonymous platform for sexual survivors to keep a record of the assault so that they have the choice to report the crime when ready. The records are modelled on the police questionnaire, but built around offering support to survivors and kindness around their trauma.

We launched in Beta version last year, but now we need your help to go widely, so that survivors have even more options at hand. Please consider supporting us!
