Operation UAD

Thank you for reading our Operation UAD page. We hope that you like what we are hoping to achieve and will continue to follow and support us.

We are now at the end of the journey. This page will be closing shortly and the funds will be paid to Alzheimers Society. Thank you for your support.

UAD are the initials of the Alzheimer’s Society strapline- United Against Dementia.

Many people are affected by this debilitating disease with the members of this team being no different to most others. In 1988 Chris’ Father sadly passed away as a result of the disease while currently a relation of John is suffering.

THE RALLY

After driving 3000km+ from Glasgow to Monte Carlo between Wednesday 31st January and Wednesday 7th February we were classified as finishing in 230th place. We have also won the Saltire Cup for being the highest placed smallest engine Glasgow starter. Proving that Mini's can still win trophies.

We started the event with 4 aims and achieved 3 of them- we gained an entry, we finished and were not classified as last!

We had fun, we cursed a bit at times while we laughed at others. If you see us at all and have a couple of hours to spare we will keep you entertained. Most of all we have raised some money for Alzheimers Society. Not as much as would have liked so will keep this page open for a while longer.

MIMI the MIni was on display on Friday 23rd January in the Angel Place Shopping Centre in Bridgwater. We (John & Chris and Chris & Bob (service crew) were with her to keep her company. A lot of people came and said hello and a lot of questions were answered. Our visitors included followers on facebook and also our followers from Sedgemoor FM. Our thanks go to Roger Smith and the Angel Place team for allowing us onto their premises.

WHAT IS OPERATION UAD?

Two Somerset based motorsport stalwarts have been coaxed out of retirement and plan to take part in a gruelling international rally adventure to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Chris Mockridge and John Varney hope to pit their wits against over three hundred other car enthusiasts as they climb the starting ramps in Europe in the 2018 Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique. In the 1970's and 1980's Chris & John regularly competed on rallies in the South West of England and Wales. In 1982 and 1983 they were 1300cc Road Rally Champions in the Association of South Western Motor Clubs championship.

As the name suggests, this event is not for the modern World Rally Championship type cars. To be eligible the type of car must have entered a Monte Carlo rally between 1955 and 1980.

The event uses routes from the Monte Carlo Rallies of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and uses regularity timing to determine the winners. This presents a challenge not only to the cars but also the crew.

Competitors in The Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, as with its predecessors The Monte Carlo Rally, start from many different locations, in 2017 these were- Glasgow, Reims, Lisbon, Bad Homburg, Oslo, Copenhagen and Turin. We are due to start from Glasgow on 31st January.

If you require more information on the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique, please see http://acm.mc/edition/rallye-monte-carlo-historique-edition-2018/ for more information on the Rally.

If you would like to "follow" this project and see the progress of the car that we will be using, we have a Facebook page which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/Operation-UAD-164500010755843/

Objective

We only have one objective. That is to raise as much money as we can for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Our objective is to raise £10000 for Alzheimers Society out of a total of £16000 target.

£10,000 could provide a lifeline to 800 people affected by dementia who have reached breaking point, with help, advice and information from a national Dementia Helpine Advisor.

£10,000 could help researchers better understand how dementia with Lewy bodies develops, paying for nearly three and a half years (41 months) supply of a dye used in brain scanning. The dye gives a clearer picture of how brain and nerve cells are functioning.

Of the money’s raised, a minimum of 60% will be passed to the Alzheimer’s Society, 40% of the total raised, with a limit of £6000 will be used to cover the entry fee and other admin costs for the event. We will fund the ferry crossings, fuel, hotels and food bills ourselves. Our estimated costs for the event are in excess of £8000.
