Story

For Autism Awareness Month in April, I’ve set myself the challenge of walking and running 150 miles (242 km) - to put into perspective this distance is the same as going from Portsmouth to Jersey then to St Malo. This cause is incredibly close to my heart, as autism directly impacts my life, and I want to channel my energy and own struggles into raising awareness and funds for two charities that have made a huge difference to me, Autism Jersey and Healing Waves.

Both of these organisations have provided me with support and opportunities that I’m truly grateful for. After my dreams of pursuing swimming around the island this year were taken away due to my epilepsy, I found new ways to stay active through running and long coastal walks. I wanted to take on a big challenge this year in replacement but I had to make sure that I worked within my health remits! This challenge is my way of giving back while raising funds to help Autism Jersey continue its vital work and to support Healing Waves in their mission to offer water-based therapies to individuals with disabilities. The money raised will help both charities provide essential services to the autism community and individuals who benefit from their programs.

Autism Jersey is a local charity that provides advocacy, support, and services for individuals with autism. They offer a range of initiatives including coffee mornings, sibling support groups, and family events that help individuals and families live more inclusive, fulfilling lives. They’re highly respected in the community and continue to make a huge impact on people’s lives, and work very closely with the Government of Jersey.

Healing Waves is an independent charity in Jersey that offers individuals with learning or physical disabilities the chance to experience the therapeutic power of water through surfing. For me, Healing Waves has been life-changing. After being told I could never swim in the sea again due to my epilepsy, I was devastated. But Healing Waves gave me a way back into the water, allowing me to surf and enjoy the sea with their support. This charity has made a huge difference in my life, and I’m proud to support them as they continue to provide these amazing experiences for others.

Autism is often misunderstood, with many people still seeing it as something that only affects communication or day-to-day functioning. But autism is simply a different way of processing the world, and it doesn’t define a person’s capabilities. People with autism are unique individuals, and no two experiences are the same. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness and challenge misconceptions — so we can build a more inclusive and understanding community.

Through this 150-mile challenge, I hope to raise awareness for autism and support these incredible charities that have had such a positive impact on my life. Every mile will bring me one step closer to what I hope will be helping create a world where everyone, no matter their challenges, is valued and supported.
