Story
Hi I'm Tully, Paralympic Champion in swimming but I use the athletic sport of Frame Running (racerunning) for cross training. I've had the privilege to see the difference the freedom of a frame runner can make to disabled people, especially children, and this has lead to me deciding to set up my own club in Loughborough as there currently isn't a club in East or West Midlands; in fact the closest club is in Manchester so we need to change that!
Over the summer whilst on holiday in Australia I was able to meet Amy Tobin who set up non-profit organisation Now I Can Run. They are set up all over Australia and now in New Zealand and Germany too. I knew immediately that I wanted to try replicate this in the UK so I've set myself a ten year plan, starting with Loughborough first. I'm working with Amy to set up the UK's first Now I Can Run and cannot wait to get started. Frame Running is an adapted sport for children, young people and adults who cannot functionally run and rely on sports aids for mobility and balance. A frame runner is a three wheeled frame where the athlete is supported by a saddle and body plate. The athlete propels against the frame using their feet, and steers using the mobility within their hands and/or arms. People with Cerebral Palsy and other conditions can take part in Frame Running as a recreational activity and Frame Running is a very effective way of improving overall fitness, strength and physical and emotional well-being.
This is an incredible sport where people who are not able to walk can run! Unfortunately these frames are imported in as there isnt yet a company who makes them in the UK and they are very expensive so we need to fundraise! I have secured charity funding for six frames but we now need to fundraise to cover frame storage cost, helmets, insurance, foam padding, hand grips, cones and other equipment as well as trying to buy some second hand frames.
So 14 year old frame runner Caitlyn from the Manchester frame running club who has Cerebral Palsy, as well as my friend Jono who has Muscular Dystrophy and Caitlyn's dad Andy (a sidekick) are joining me for the half triathlon at the Superhero Series Triathlon at Dorney Lake to try raise as much money as possible for the club. This involves a 400 meter swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run. This will be a real challenge for us but we are determined to complete it whilst having fun!
