My son Tom is a bright happy 26 year old with a fierce independent streak. Tom has a condition known as athetoid cerebral palsy which means he cannot walk and relies on a wheelchair. For the past 10 years he has had a powered wheelchair which has greatly enhanced his quality of life. We have maintained it regularly but unfortunately it is now beyond economic repair. Although we anticipated this over 2 years ago and put him on the waiting list for the NHS to supply a powered wheelchair, funding cuts to the service mean that it will be at least another 2 years before the NHS can provide a replacement.

Tom will be leaving home soon and moving into residential accommodation, but at the moment he has to use a manual wheelchair. His condition means he cannot push himself, so every aspect of his life, even moving from one room to another or going out shopping, at present requires someone being available to push his chair.

We have looked into buying a suitable replacement powered wheelchair for Tom, and it will cost approximately £6500. We are planning to undertake various fundraising initiatives. Details will appear on this page, but in the meantime any donation, however small will be most gratefully received.
