Story

We have supported the Earthly Paradise English Secondary School in Lamjung, Nepal since 2017. We initially raised some £600 for scholarships and in 2021 we raised a further £1,500 which helped the school build a water fountain that serves both the school and the local community — in addition to scholarships.

The school is in remote and challenging part of the Nepalese countryside and provides an education to children from a very large geographical area. Mothers will often move to the town in order to support their child at school while the father stays to earn enough money to pay the fees. Places at the school are very sought-after and families are often stretched to the limit in order for their children to get a basic education. We hope that, with the benefit of your donations, we can alleviate the burden on families and permit children to attend from circumstances that would normally be exclusionary.

The public schooling infrastructure in Nepal not robust and less that 50% of students are able to attain the Nepali equivalent of GCSEs. A scholarship to Earthly Paradise is a potentially life changing opportunity and we want to provide this to as many deserving children as possible.

Why Earthly Paradise

We were connected to the school through Exeter College who partnered with them to build a library. In 2017 we visited the school and saw first-hand the effort and quality of the school. We know the leadership and we have complete trust in their ability to succeed for its pupils.

What are we doing?

We are cycling along the Wales Coastal Path from Prestatyn to Cardiff. That’s a 500 mile journey which will take approximately 10 days to complete. We will be camping along the way.

The cycle is starting on 20 June 2024.

Where will the money go?

Last year out of the £1,500 raised £500 went to fund a 1 year scholarship to 9 pupils and the rest to build the water fountain. We are hoping for a similar split this year as infrastructure is a key part of improving the education provided to the children in Nepal.

Please consider supporting us and The Earthly Paradise School. Donations of any amount would be wonderful!

We will be posting updates and live-streams on Facebook & Instagram.

Thank you!

We taught some more lessons, now beginning to get a repertoire together. As you would expect, different age groups of children behave very differently. The younger ones are intensively loud, ask continuous questions and think everything is very funny (most of the jokes must be pretty esoteric because we certainly don’t know what they are laughing at…), but naturally they are also incredibly sweet and have adorably cheeky personalities. So many Nepalese kids that we have come across have a cheeky persona. The older ones are studious and listen intently, but when cajoled to start asking numerous questions as well. They’re great to teach!
