Story
I am spending the next 6 weeks volunteering for a NGO in Jaipur, India called Naya Sawera. They do such a great job of feeding, nurturing, educating & empowering some of Jaipur's poorest communities & rely on funds from sponsors or donations to keep their projects running.
Having seen first hand the impact that the charity has over the people it works with, I have been motivated to begin fund raising to help to enable them to continue their good work.
The reason I have decided to support this particular charity is because of their belief that the youth of today is the driving force for tomorrow - a belief which I firmly hold myself, & also because of their altruistic & non-profit mentality where ALL proceeds go directly into the poorest slum communities.
Naya Sawera run several projects at the same time. Here is a brief outline of each project.
- SNEHACHAL: Naya Sawera runs an orphanage for 25 children (aged 4-17) who have lost their parents to HIV.
- SANTUSHTI: this campaign provides delicious & healthy food to the kids of various slum areas, care homes & hospitals. On my first day volunteering, this initiative saw almost 300 children be fed in one sitting. The cost per child was less than 6p!
- KOKH: this project aims to provide medical & nutritional support to pregnant women in various slum areas in order to decrease maternal mortality.
- DAYS OF PRIDE: Mostly due to outdated religious beliefs, women are restricted from entering temples & kitchens, & are even not allowed to enter their own bed or use the same utensils as other family members during their period. Because of these taboos, Naya Sawera aim to educate communities that there should be no shame associated with this natural cycle. They hand-make & distribute sanitary pads to women in the slum communities for free, thus allowing them to go about their everyday lives with no shame.
