Story
If you've arrived on this page because you supported my Summer 2019 sponsored cycle, thank you for your continued interest in our project! If you're only just learning about Nalolo Community Health Initiative, 'Welcome'.
Nalolo is a rural community in the Western Province of Zambia, which subsists on small scale farming and fishing. The current health clinic sits on the banks of the Zambezi River and used to serve thousands of families in the surrounding area until recent years, when it fell into disrepair, accelerated by worsening flood damage. As a result, visits by healthcare assistants from the nearest town are now rare, and the ever-growing flood plain during the rainy season makes it almost impossible for local people to travel to the nearest district hospital, some 25 miles. There is a desperate need to improve healthcare facilities for the local community and our aim is meet that need and give the local community a new clinic. We have set up a non-profit organisation, recruited a management committee of local people and gained the support of the community. Delivery of building materials began in July and construction of the clinic started in September; we are now on the final push to realise our goal of making this really happen for the people of Nalolo.
We are asking for your support to help us equip the clinic. We still need to buy:
- solar panels (and install) to power the refrigeration;
- WHO specified refrigeration to store medicines and vaccines
- hospital beds and baby cots
- starter medical kit to include blood pressure machines, weighing machine and stethoscopes.
With your help, we know we can achieve our aim and make a massive difference to the health of the people of Nalolo. Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

I'm Pota Kalima, a Zambian doctor living in Edinburgh for almost 20 years. In July 2019, I undertook a 600 mile sponsored cycle across my home country to raise money for a cause close to my heart - to build a health clinic in Western Zambia where my father was born and grew up.
