Story
I’ve set myself a personal challenge. On Thursday 1st September I will play the piano non-stop for 12 hours in the Yamaha Store, 152-160 Wardour St, London, for charity.
This is going to push me right outside of my comfort zone. I was a classically trained piano and flute player, but I have always been nervous of playing with and in front of others. I have a fear of getting things wrong, of not being perfect. Yet I know that music shouldn’t be about this. Music is fun. It’s messy. Mistakes don’t matter. The hair standing up on the back of your arms when you’re with your best mates singing your heart out does. It’s loud and chaotic and most critically music forms part of all our lives.
There are a reported 13.6 million lapsed adult instrumental players in the UK. I am one of them. I want to change that through doing this challenge. But most importantly the money I raise will go directly to supporting kids to learn music in a messy, chaotic, fun, enjoyable way in their schools who might not otherwise have had the opportunity.
The work of Musical Futures (musicalfutures.org) is so important because it provides a pedagogical approach for teachers and practitioners to deliver to ensure that every child has the opportunity to be involved in music, not just those who can afford it or who are perceived to be ‘talented’.
Your donation will go directly into supporting Musical Futures’ Make Music to Make Music campaign (http://bit.ly/29vwIWD). I’ve got 12 hours of playing to fill and there are only so many Beatles songs I can play. So don’t just donate, send me a request and we’ll give you a shout out when I play your song.
With grateful thanks to the team at the Yamaha Store for their support with this event.

8 years agoAll done! Was a fab day of informal music making, with amazing support from friends, family & colleagues in person and online. Thank you once again to everybody for donating. We'll be announcing shortly where the money will go to and show how it will make a difference. Check out the films from the event on www.facebook.com/musicalfutures. This page is now closed, but if you have arrived here and want to donate you still can via https://www.musicalfutures.org/support-us/pianothon-2016. So after years of not playing, I did it. Who is next....?

8 years agoHad a bit of a piano practice setback as spent the majority of last week in hospital with my 4 year old son Vinnie. He's better, but my playing has taken a back seat. Back in the stool now, and am on countdown until the 12 hour marathon! Vinnie will be coming along on the day to hear me play his favourite song (Vance Joy - Riptide) so he will get a big shout out. Particular thanks to the wonderful MF team for all of their support this week, and for putting an exciting social media plan in place for the big day. Four days to go!

9 years agoI've ramped up the practice this week, and have enjoyed dealing with all of the requests that have come in - have discovered some new music, and rediscovered old favourites. This week I visited the Yamaha Music Store to check out the piano I'll be playing on, and the shop-window stage. I'm practising fairly intensely now, and have an aching back and stiff fingers so am stocking up on wrist supports, ibuprofen and deep heat. But, I am absolutely loving playing again and if doing this encourages others to do the same it is 100% worth it.
