    Story

This summer I am visiting the most deprived area in Fiji, following the worst recorded cyclone disaster in 2016, that tore roofs of houses and caused $1.4bn worth of damage across the nation. Following this disaster, 75% of families live in poverty, 50% of the population have no access to safe drinking water and 400 schools have been damaged.

I will be working for a charity that has so far supported over 20,000 children and helped increase literacy skills by 40%. They have also helped to increase participation in sports by 600%, school attendance has risen by 15%, and over 3 million Fijian dollars has been invested in the education system, health clinics and fresh water systems.

My role is to work in one of the most deprived schools, that has been waiting over 5 years for government support. I will mainly be supporting children who need extra help in the classroom. I will also be running after school clubs to help entertain and develop the children and helping to rebuild the community.

Whilst undertaken this mission, I will be living alongside a local family with no internet, electricity, or bed, and only a cold bucket of water to wash with. I am paying for the travel and expenses myself, but I am planning to raise money for the children to improve their quality of lives.

Last summer I worked in an underprivileged summer camp in America and enjoyed making a difference for the children. I felt a sense of reward and a joy for helping people, that is why I have signed up to help this great charity.

All donations towards my trip will be gratefully accepted. Thank you for helping me make a difference for those who are less fortunate!
