Story

For those of you who don't know our son Mikko he was born nearly 15 years ago. He failed all hearing tests from birth and was issued with hearing aids and we had to learn to sign as new parents. As things progressed over the next few months he was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Hurlers Syndrome (MPS1). Its a very rare condition and we learned that this potentially life limiting condition involved heart issues, skeletal issues which inhibited his walking along with curvature of his spine and hip mobility. It also meant clouding of his corneas, delayed learning and basically a lot going on for a little lad. At 6 months old he underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant. He was in hospital for 4 months over Xmas in Manchester, it was successful and improved his hearing also 🥳 The BMT hasn't cured him but its given him a chance at life and has enabled him to thrive and be a ray of light in lots of peoples lives, especially ours.

Now 14 years old, lockdown has been very difficult for him and Mikko was in the house for around 80 days, following that any walks would be in his wheelchair until he decided a few months ago (with a little encouragement) to try and walk around the green next to our house. Its only 900m but after stopping 3 times he managed to complete it. We then set him a challenge to see if he could do it everyday and perhaps complete a Marathon...and so Mikkos' Marathon was born. He has now completed 45 days in a row (over 40km) and decided this week to try and help give something back, so it wasn't our intention to raise money but anybody that would like to donate the money will be split between 2 great causes to help children in Manchester Hospital over Xmas and children like Mikko with MPS. Don't feel guilty if you can't donate, but thanks for reading his story and being part of his journey. Mikko has a habit of inspiring people wherever he goes with his infectious smile and his desire to succeed.
