Story
So many people have been so adversely affected by the changes to IR35 in April 2017 - public sector bodies are having to pay more than private sector ones for exactly the same services, some contractors have found themselves unable to pay their mortgages; people are having their contracts deemed inside IR35 and thus being taxed as an employee without receiving any employment rights or protections.
How is any of this fair or just?
We support fair taxation but not taxation which promotes such inequity and unfairness.
In order to consider a challenge to IR35, we need to determine the best grounds for doing so. We are drawing up a brief for a barrister and once we have raised sufficient funds, we can ask him to conduct the research and analysis exercise based on our brief.
Are we worthy?
When I was creating our crowd funding page, I read so many moving stories about people, old and young, who were going through such awful experiences - leading such difficult lives - but were trying to make a difference by raising money for medical treatment or to give the sufferer some respite.
I had to stop and think - "in comparison to what these people are dealing with, is this IR35 stuff really all that important?"
Then I reminded myself of some of our own stories that people had sent to me in confidence: relationships are breaking down, people are struggling emotionally, people are losing their livelihoods - even the very roof over their heads - because of this awful, discriminatory piece of vindictive legislation.
Human suffering comes in many forms and unfairness should be challenged wherever it exists.

8 years agoOur fundraising page will close on the last day of July. On behalf of everyone I am fighting for, I just wanted to thank you all for your generosity in helping us exceed our target. We will use this money sensibly to get IR35 changed from a tax instrument which penalises hard-working people to something which which is fair and equitable. I believe I have communicated with everyone who has asked to be put on our mailing list, but if I have missed you off, please do drop me a line at michgibs@hotmail.com. Thank you again! Mike

8 years agoI've had a few queries about what we'll do with the excess money. Any money that is left over will be used to carry on the fight. If the legal advice comes back that we have grounds for challenging IR35, the we will spend the money on that. If the advice is that we have no grounds for challenge, we will use the money for lobbying. I intend to see this fight through to the end irrespective of whether it is using legal challenge or lobbying government for change. Once again, I cannot thank you all for your generosity and support

I am an Educational Psychologist (Ltd company) working in LAs/schools. Some LAs are taking a blanket approach, regardless of the 3 pillars, citing irrelevant aspects to justify their stance.
