Story

This July I will be flying to South Africa as part of a team of volunteers from my church, where we will be working with local missionaries to run a camp outside of Capetown in a township called Masiphumelele (Masi for short).

To help finance the trip I'm taking on a 3x3000 challenge: I'm planning to walk 3 of the Lake District's peaks over 3000 feet in one day. The peaks are Helvellyn, Scafell, and England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. The walk will take in other peaks as well in its 20 miles over England's most demanding and spectacular landscape. The walk will take about 14 hours. Glorious, gruelling, and definitely worth it for the children of Masi.

Masi is home to thousands of children, many of whom care for their large families and almost all of whom lack a father figure in their lives. This means that boys and girls barely old enough for secondary school are left in charge of often large families of small children, meaning that they have no time to look after themselves and enjoy their childhoods. The summer camp I will be helping at will provide children from the age of 5 to 18 with access to food, water, showers and a dry, comfy bed. For many of the kids there it will be their only chance to enjoy these luxuries all year. The camp will be full of fun and laughs, with games and talks throughout the day. In the past these camps have been hugely influential in the childrens' lives and remembered for years to come.
