Story
Following their walk to the shrine of St Mary's at Cleator, Cumbria in 2023, Michael Donlan and Mark Ibison will continue their journeys this summer, firstly by walking 30 miles from St Peter's Cathedral, Lancaster to the shrine at Fernyhalgh near Preston, to arrive on the feast day of Our Lady of Fernyhalgh, Tuesday the 25th of June.
The second stage of the pilgrim journey, to start on the 1st of September, will see Mark cycling 235 miles over 4 days, from Preston to Our Lady's national shrine at Walsingham, Norfolk. He plans to meet the official Lancaster pilgrimage which has recently been re-instituted after a break of several years.
Michael and Mark are two trustees of the Rwanda Group Trust, a small Preston-based registered charity, founded by Joe Bamber who was an inspirational local schoolteacher.

4 months agoAfter 4 days on the road Mark arrived - very thankfully - in Walsingham on Wednesday 4th September. He was then able to join in with the Lancaster pilgrims who had been there since Monday. Mark was encouraged by those he met and stayed with along the way and certainly appreciated the signposting on the various National Cycle Network (NCN) routes used to guide him to Our Lady's principal English shrine. In the photo he is seen in front of the modern Church of the Annunciation, Walsingham, with trusty 'Matilda' who had carried him there.

5 months agoThe continued generous support from our sponsors is very encouraging. Thanks to all! Mark has been working recently to prepare the donated bike which is to carry him to Walsingham, and also trying to get in a few miles' training, mainly on Preston's famous 'Guild Wheel' route.

6 months agoThe first of the Pilgrimages of Mary is now completed! In the morning, again in sunshine, we continued from Barton through Broughton to reach Fernyhalgh, in time for Mass for the feast of Our Lady of Fernyhalgh. Arriving early we were able to visit the shrine and the well. We were joined for the Mass by two other RGT trustees, Bernadette and Veronica, and were grateful to the priest for mentioning our pilgrimage and its RGT connection. Thanks to all our generous sponsors and supporters. Further news of the 2nd pilgrimage in September!
