    Story

Charlton Community Gardens welcomes your donations via Justgiving in support of our gardening projects in the Charlton area.

    About us……….

Charlton Community Gardens was set up in 2012 with the aim of bringing unloved and unused spaces back into productive community use.  The garden at Charlton Station was our first garden and was started in April 2013. It has been developed as an organic, demonstration garden to show that food can be grown in small spaces as well as provide habitats for wildlife. Extending our wildlife habitat is a priority for 2022.

We were initially supported with a grant from the National Gardens Scheme/Royal Horticultural Society Elspeth Thompson Bursary, and we have been given use of the station area by Southeastern Railways. More recently, we have attracted sponsorship from local businesses to continue maintaining and improving the garden. We also need donations from our local supporters

In 2017 we created a small orchard in Charlton Park; 8 fruit trees, including a donated fig were planted in a designated area close to the Old Cottage Cafe. This was later expanded into a small garden which includes fruit bushes and some flowering plants. Then in March 2018 we developed a second small orchard in Charlton Park. Our second phase.   Fruit trees planted include apples, crab apple, pears, plums, damson and quince were planted. Some trees have been replaced and the garden closte to the Old Cottage Cafe extended. In 2021 a range of spring bulbs were planted. The garden is run with a small Management Committee. Members and volunteers on our mailing list give practical help and support with gardening and watering tasks for example. We are always ready to welcome new volunteers of any age, circumstance, or experience.

Working with local groups and organisations is fundamental to our project so that we can share skills and knowledge and build stronger community networks.

Thanks everyone for your support during the spring and summer. We are so pleased that so many of you had flowers and vegetable plants from us. We do hope that they thrived and that you got a good crop from your veg. We continue to be open for donations. We need a new raised bed at the station and we have this autumn ordered a special recyclable/compostable paper cup and lid container to be fitted near to the Old Cottage Cafe in Charlton Park.
