Story
Omar is perhaps the happiest child I have ever met. No matter what day it is, he comes into school with a massive smile on his face, ready to learn and have fun with his friends. In my opinion, Omar is the best example of just how far determination and hard work can take you. Each day, I see Omar overcome obstacles that would make even adults crumble. Yet, no matter the task, Omar always tackles it with a massive smile, which made me wonder if I could do the same while running a marathon.
So, as there was only one way to find out, I signed myself up for one (the Cambridge Boundary Run) and started some much-needed training. The course is relatively flat, but the terrain is not as forgiving, spanning many muddy and off-road areas, making it more of a cross-country marathon—which, of course, only adds a bit more ‘fun’ to an already difficult endeavour.
But the goal isn’t really the marathon; it’s to raise as much money as possible for Omar’s physical therapy. Due to his Ataxia, Omar struggles with tasks that require balance and coordination. This makes everyday activities that most people take for granted—like writing, walking, running, kicking, and catching—more challenging for him. However, through physical therapy, he can counteract the effects of his condition and achieve amazing things.
Even though he is only a little boy in Year Two, I have learned a lot from him. He has been a great inspiration to me, so when the running gets tough, I think of him saying, "I bet you can't catch me!" before speeding off into the distance. That thought leaves me with no other choice but to keep running until I catch him. (But even in my head, he’s too quick for me!)
All the money raised will go directly to Omar's loving family so they can provide him with the best possible care. His physical therapy is expensive but incredibly effective, as I’ve seen first-hand how much it helps him. His family already does a wonderful job providing him with these opportunities, but I find myself in a unique position where I can start this fundraising page, run a marathon, and—along with your help—raise as much money as possible to support Omar and his family even further.
But I can’t do this alone—I need your help! If you’re able to donate, please do! Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference in changing Omar’s life.
