    Story

Peace Poetry - 21st-century Visions of Peace

The wonderful ‘Peace Poetry’ will take place on 11 November, the centenary of the peace that ended the First World War, on the outskirts of Oxford. I have invited a number of accomplished poets, several local, an American poet living in Italy, and a poet from Bonn, a city twinned with Oxford in the aftermath of World War II in the pursuit of lasting peace. There will be an ‘open mic’, and a local veteran will be contributing. There will also be pictures by a local artist, and a game that recreates games played in the trenches, for sale.

There will be a collection for a fantastic peace charity at the event.

Costs include expenses for the poets coming from abroad (approx. £375), a minibus to take people to and from the event (£250), advertising in a national literary journal and local papers (£210); fliers/leaflets (self-made, £100) Hall hire and temporary licence £71; flowers for the hall, £25. A donation of £250 and a few raffle ticket sales mean the target is less than that total.

Here’s some detail about ‘Peace Poetry’:

Over the past 4 years there have been numerous commemorations of the tragic events of 1914 to 1918. As World War I has come to represent war in essence (at least for Western Europe), so Armistice Day has served to represent peace.

With conflict still apparent in many parts of the world:

I think it is worth our while, as thinking and intentional beings, to give some proper consideration to peace. It is more than just an absence of killing, persecution, and forced flight.

I know that to allow peace to grow and flourish, people must recognise peace, its full potential and power, in and with our thoughts.

I have asked each guest poet to choose a poem from World War I, by any of that illustrious group known collectively as ‘the War Poets’, most of whom did not survive that war. I have asked for a response to the chosen poem, in the form of a poem as part of creating a vision of peace as it can and will be lived. A couple of the poets have a visual-art element to their work and will be working with that.

    About the Poets:

Rip Bulkeley: author of a considerable number of books on historical and socio-political subjects, Rip has long been a pillar of the Oxford poetry scene, founding Oxford Backroom Poets in 1999. He has just produced an anthology in support of the survivors of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Jenny Lewis: three collections, two with Oxford and Carcanet; two chapbooks with the Iraqi poet Adnan Al-sayegh ; poems and articles in prominent journals, awards including New Writer Prize and Hawthornden Fellowship; works with music and dance; teaches poetry at Oxford University.

Jalina Mhyana: founding editor of the literary journal Rock Salt Plum Review, several times nominated for a Pushcart prize, three poetry collections, now editor for a Tuscan literary journal. Identified as ‘one to watch’ by an online culture magazine.

Paul Surman: Oxfordshire poet, much loved by other local poets for the delicacy and freshness of his vision. His first collection, Places, was recently published, his second is on the way, and his poetry has been widely published in journals.

Eva Wal: Eva is a force of nature, really. She combines poetry with visual and kinetic art in constantly surprising and delightful ways; she builds; and she is at the heart of the group of Bonn poets who welcomed a group of poets from Oxford last summer, and produced some delightful collaborations.

Merryn Williams: has had many books published, including four poetry collections; an introduction to Wilfred Owen’s life and work; literary adviser, Wilfred Owen Society; founding editor of The Interpreters House poetry magazine. She produced tge anthology 'For Jeremy Corbyn'. Shoestring are publishing her Selected Poems next year.

Pat Winslow: originally an actor, she has produced seven poetry collections, won several awards for poetry and for short fiction, is an experienced ‘writer in residence’ in prison and hospitals; she runs writing workshops, storytelling sessions, and is a humanist celebrant.

    Also:

Songs from Patrissia Cuberos, originally a soprano in the Colombian National Opera company, long settled in Oxfordshire where she leads choirs, teaches singing and tango, creates, directs and performs in dance/music/drama vignettes, and writes mind-opening books.

A Lebanese friend who has lived through war in her home country, and a powerful writer, will also contribute. I'll add her name when she confirms.

A Syrian refugee living in Oxfordshire, Marad, will also read some poems.

Louise Larchbourne, organiser: member of two Oxford poetry groups; organiser of ‘Poetry at the Ashmolean’, a bi-monthly event in which local poets are invited to write on a theme and on an object in the Ashmolean museum, then take part in a public reading in the museum. Poems published in three anthologies and several online journals. Also an actor.

    The venue:

The town hall, Beckley; in collaboration with

The Abingdon Arms, a community-run pub, committed to putting on really engaging events of many kinds, involving the local community. They have an excellent PA system and are very supportive of the arts. The lovely location is easy to find by car, being about 2 miles past Barton and the Oxford ring road.

Booking has started! I've had several emails from people (strangers) telling me how much they love the sound of the project. Tonight is one of the open mic readings I've arranged to sell raffle tickets for the Peace Poetry raffle. Thank you so much for your support; it is both practically useful and heartening.
