Iʼve raised £549 to Support the GB&NI Sports Therapy Team of the World Transplant Games

Funded on Wednesday, 21st December 2022

    Story

I have been supporting the Transplant Games since 2014 at the British, European and World Transplant Games, being surrounded by athletes who achieve something special every day. It has been a tough couple of years for everybody, and the transplant games could not be held. However, this summer has seen the return of both the British and European Transplant Games. It has been great to be back again!

Next year will see the return of the World Transplant Games, being held in Perth, Australia. I have been selected to once again be part of team GB&NI, as part of the Sports Therapy team, ensuring that our athletes are able to compete to the best of their abilities.

Every member has to raise their own funds and so ,therefore, I will be organising various events throughout the year to help support my fundraising efforts. As you may know last year I swam the length of Windermere, 11 miles in 6 hours 4 minutes raising funds for the Transplant Sport medical team. This year I am taking my swimming colder… and then further…

This winter I am doing the polar bear challenge, swimming open water from the 1st November through to 31st March (Christmas day included!). This will be in skins… swimming costume only allowed.

I will then be going for the chill swim triple crown... Coniston (5.25 miles), Ullswater (7.5 miles) and Windermere (11 miles)- all next summer and all without a wetsuit!

Seeing these athletes compete makes me want to complete my own challenges. Therefore, I thought this would be an appropriate way to finish off the fundraising efforts.

I will continue to update this page with my fundraising efforts throughout the year.

This challenge will be carried out to both help raise awareness of Transplant Sport and Organ Donation but also to raise funds for the medical team who support the transplant games.

There is no government support for the team, each athlete and support staff needs to raise their own funds. Therefore, I NEED YOUR HELP! All funds raised will be going towards supporting the medical team (Physio and Sports Therapists) so we can provide our support to the athletes.

Each athlete has undergone a life-saving transplant and, through determination and hard work, has battled to be selected and compete at this high international level. Our role as sports therapists is to support the athletes throughout the games by preparing them for competition and helping to minimise injury risk. We are very proud of these athletes and feel honoured to support them. We would ask you to join the organ donor register if you have not already done so.

Thank you for reading this page and for any donations you have made and will be making.
