Story
An Update from JustGiving 06/07/21
We are extremely pleased that the family at the heart of this appeal have been found. They have very kindly given us this statement:
“In the interests of our daughter and our family we would like to remain private however we wish to thank everyone for your amazing support. Our daughter would like to request your generous donations go to UNICEF, knowing that your kindness will do good.”
It is testament to the family’s spirit of kindness and belief that society is better when people are kinder to one another, that they have extremely generously chosen to donate this gift in its entirety to UNICEF. As a result, the legacy of the support from thousands of donors is that thousands of children from around the world will benefit through UNICEF’s work.
None of this would have been possible without the actions of one man taking a stand against hate in football. Thanks to Joel, thousands of people from across the UK and Germany were able to show their support for the campaign and for fans from across the other side of the pitch. Joel adds:
"I am beyond grateful to all the supporters of this campaign without whose help we would not be where we are today - from the bottom of my heart, I thank you! Thanks also to all the warm messages of support from around the UK, Europe, and as far away as Japan. Huge thanks to the JustGiving team for all their invaluable help, and to UNICEF as the worthy charity chosen by the family. Finally, I would like to give special thanks to the family at the heart of this campaign, their grace, courage, and generosity is an inspiration."
Original page story:
So yeah, England beat Germany in a major competition at last (well done).
However, an unsavouraby element of social media piled in on this photo of an upset little girl (as seen in this tweet by Stan Collymore).
Pretty horrible - to put it mildly.
Yes, there are more people affected by this than just this little girl but hey, this is just meant to be a token of goodwill. Yes there are other potential good causes - but I've picked this.
I'd like to think that the parents of the little girl will spend this on a nice treat for her so that she knows that not everyone from the UK is horrible and that we care.
No, I don't think this will change the world. But it can do one thing for that little girl.
No, I don't know who the girl is (yet) but I know social media can sort that out. :)
peace x

3 years agoThanks to *everyone* who has helped us get to £30K. You are fantastic. I am working closely with (and am very grateful for!) Felix from the Just Giving team and we're hoping to announce some positive developments in the next day or so. We'll also announce how we will be bringing this successful campaign to a close. Thanks for all of your support. Joel

3 years agoTo recap the plan here…. We are exploring how to find the family (if they want to be found). I am liaising with a representative of Just Giving to help here (plus other orgs). If it looks like we cannot get in touch, then *all* monies will go to a designated charity. Sadly I am not going on holiday to Bali (despite what I'm being told on Twitter). I am looking into a timescale to end this campaign and that will be announced here next week. Thanks again for your amazing support. Please continue to share. Joel

3 years agoTo the family of the little girl. I can *completely* understand if you do not want to get in touch, given the publicity. All I can say is this: if you can make contact with a trusted org that can mediate on your behalf, we can have a private dialogue as to your wishes. Failing that, I intend for all monies raised to go to a relevant good cause.

The Irony is I've only decided to donate because of all the abuse I've seen this morning towards you for setting this up.
