Story
I am a teacher at May Park Primary School in Easton, Bristol. It is a school in a deprived area with under privileged families. We are a diverse school and speak over 40 different languages, children come from all over the world and we have several refugee families.
We are looking for ways to celebrate our diversity and the cultures represented at our school and want to do this through music. We believe that it is important for children to understand and celebrate different cultures. Music is something accessible to all, regardless of language, it also is proven to build community and relationship and is widely used as a form of therapy.
We have a two year vision which includes;
learning songs alongside professional musicians,
learning a variety of traditional dance moves with a professional dancer
engaging parents with making a film about their own cultural experiences with music,
singing alongside the AMJ band that we met last summer
bringing Toto La Momposina, a famous Colombian musician, over to Bristol and learning songs with her, and putting on a performance for the local community.
With increasing government funding cuts and budgets getting tighter we have to raise the money for this from outside of school.
This project aims to inspire the children at our school, give them a wide range of experiences of different cultures. We hope that the project will open up their eyes to a variety of future opportunities. It will be a celebration of our local diverse culture.
