Investing your own money in the Stock Market can be a very rewarding activity both financially and intellectually. It can also be fun and a very sociable activity. However, there are many pitfalls which private investors need to guard against, even those with experience. These pitfalls can range from behavioural biases (e.g. cutting profits and running losses), buying “story stocks” which offer great promise but often end in failure, acts of fraud, incompetence or greed by company directors and poorly conceived legislation.

ShareSoc , is a not for profit organisation, established to further the interest of investors by providing education and advice to retail investors, lobbying government and industry participants, campaigning against corporate excess and organising events for private investors to engage with public companies. Anyone who is a member of an employer pension scheme or who holds shares and funds through an ISA or SIPP benefits from ShareSoc’s work.

ShareSoc is a membership organisation which charges its members a modest annual fee. It operates with the help of an enthusiastic and hard working group of individuals who give their time for free. It needs additional resources to continue its excellent work. The money raised will be used to help ShareSoc install an up to date membership database and online member support forum and to further its educational work.

I started running about five years ago and have slowly increased the distance run from a few hundred metres to 10k. I am now planning to step up to a half marathon which is 21km by running in the Hackney Half Marathon on May 20th, 2018.
