    Story

Thanks to warmhearted Leithers, we now need just £350 more to settle the last of our costs on The Darting Salamander, Leith's joyfully successful first anthology. Any contribution is welcome and will be listed with thanks in the upcoming 2022 edition.

The beautifully produced first edition has been distributed free of charge to local people and community organisations. It was launched in true Leith style to a fantastic reception at Out of the Blue Drill Hall in November 2021.

As a result, there is already great and growing support for the second edition with plans for a much bigger print run – demand far exceeded supply of the pioneering Darting Salamander. Thanks to generous help from many Leithers we can soon close this JustGiving campaign but need just a little further funding to cover the last essential costs – and if we raise any extra it will go towards a bumper second edition.

The theme for 2022 is Leith Links, celebrating and exploring the ever-growing connections – both internal and international – of the most diverse part of Scotland's capital city. A compassionately linked world has never felt more important.

So...Writers of Leith, sharpen your quill, dust off your keyboard. It's time to start work. How to start? Please join the community discussion through updates on Leith Writings websites: https://leithwritings.co.uk

The picture here shows some of the poets, writers, artists and performers who celebrated their part in The Darting Salamander at the launch on Tuesday 2 November 2021.

Every contributor here, small and great, is listed in the publication. Everyone can be part of it. That’s how Leith works!

Here we go...The Darting Salamander is now at the printer's. Thanks to the talented team at Out of the Blueprint we will soon be able to open the book, turn the pages and read the words of Leith writers, poets, storytellers, social historians... But first, your very own sneak preview of the cover by Norman Oyoo and Bethany Thompson. We celebrate the launch at Out of the Blue on Tuesday 2 November. A few places left but be sure to book. Thanks to all of you who have contributed so far, we just need a few more £££ to cover all essential costs.

And we're off...The Darting Salamander is off to print. Thanks to all you lovely 31 subscribers, we have got this far. (With Out of the Blueprint not 15thC Gutenberg) But we need a little more. Please share the message and help us raise another £1,300. The money goes to essential creative design, production, celebratory launch (free to our guests), ebook, and investment in the next edition of Leith Writings. The illustration is a 1904 reproduction of Gutenberg's printing press. The Printing Revolution was an agent of change. Let's be it

Why The Darting Salamander? Well, that will be telling...and you will find answers inside the book now darting towards publication But here's one Salamander Street, Leith: the only street of this name in the UK, probably named because of the many fiery and toxic glass and chemical works on the north side two hundred years ago. Within living memory, known as The Street of a Thousand Smells. There's more...in Leith 'a new tail grows'
