Story
I've worked with a very modest guy called Dave Kayira for the last 17 years.
Last year I discovered that he had a very famous father.
Nearly 60 years ago, Legson Kayira walked across Africa. accompanied by a copy of Pilgrims Progress and a Bible. He secured a passage to the US, a US college education and later a university place. He studied at Cambridge University here in the UK and settled here.
Legson's autobiography "I Will Try" was in the New York Times Best Sellers list for weeks.
Legson, who died in 2012, was prevented from returning to Malawi because "I Will Try" and later books about the struggles of rural Malawian life upset the the former president Hastings Banda and his regime. You can read more about this in this excellent obituary

This week Dave will travel to Malawi accompanied by his three sisters, carrying his late father's ashes. They will attend the opening of the Legson Kayira School and Community College, built by an American Charity called Youth of Malawi and named in honour of Dave's father. Dave and his sisters are doing building and volunteer work whilst out there and Legson's ashes are to be interred in his home village.

8 years agoDear All Dave Kayira and I are so grateful to you for your generous donation to the charity supporting the Legson Kayira School in Malawi - named in honour of Dave's late father. We've raised just over £2,000. I hoped we'd raise £1,000 so I'm absolutely delighted. If Just Giving's website lets me, I'll get the charity to send you an update. Thanks again Mike Griffiths
