It is with a heavy heart that I set up this funding page for my beautiful wife Leanne.

As some of you may know, Leanne has been very poorly recently & has a confirmed diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer.

The aim of our page is to raise funds to allow us to explore additional treatment for Leanne, homeopathic remedies/ therapies, dietary options & alternative therapies. The professional & comprehensive advice that we urgently & will regularly need to seek regarding Leanne’s dietary requirements, drugs to support her targeted cancer therapy and the special equipment necessary to aid her recovery, does not come cheap.

We aim to try to alkalise her diet through a high intake of raw, whole & organic food & by cutting out the sugars that make the cancer grow. We require a water purification/ filtration system to cleanse Leanne’s water supply.

Depending upon the monies raised there may be an option of sending Leanne away to targeted therapy retreats to concentrate all efforts 24/7 on really blasting this cancer via oxygen tanks, infrared saunas, acupuncture and much more.

Every little helps.

Many people who know Leanne will know how determined she is & how hard she’ll try to fight this disease, especially for her children.

To give you an idea about our back story...,

Leanne has previously been physically fit and very active. She takes pride in looking after her body AND her health.

She previously enjoyed road running up to 10km, weekly body pump classes, spin classes, and personal training sessions as well as swimming.

Leanne doesn’t smoke.

She previously carried our daughter India-Lily with a healthy & very active pregnancy even doing a spin class until the day she went into Labour!

This pregnancy though unfortunately hasn’t been so easy.

After we got married in 2016 LEANNE developed a small legion on her nose which was removed & tested. We were advised that it was likely to be caused by an auto immune disease named Sarcoidosis.

Following this Leanne had chest X-rays and CT scans which showed that she also had a Mediastinal lymphadenopathy (mass of enlarged lymph nodes in her chest). Doctors were worried so sent her to Leicester for an EBUS procedure (endobronchial ultrasound) bronchoscopy, where they biopsied the enlarged lymph nodes in her chest. Again results from that showed that that mass was benign.

Fast forward to July 2017 and Leanne started to feel very unwell complaining of chest/ pleuritic pain. Doctors initially thought that Leanne had a PE (Pulmonary Embolism) and admitted her to hospital to investigate further. After further tests & scans it became apparent that this was not a pulmonary embolism and that as well as the existing enlarged lymph nodes in the centre of Leanne’s chest, she also had a 5cm cavitating mass on her left lung.

As Leanne was only 20 weeks pregnant doctors couldn’t decide whether to take the chance of risking dangerous biopsies, offering options of either lumber puncture aspirations under local anaesthetic OR breaking her ribs and trying to get behind her breast tissue to her lung to get to the mass under general anaesthetic which was risky for both her and baby.

We were offered a termination of the pregnancy to concentrate on Leanne’s health and this was never something that Leanne was prepared to consider as she’d grown and bonded with the baby inside of her & was delighted to find out that we were having a healthy baby boy (after previously finding out that we’d lost his twin at our 12 week scan).

After much deliberation between variuos top medical professionals and consultants where both Burton and Derby hospitals held no less than 5 MDT meetings to discuss Leanne’s unusual case- we actually we found out Leanne’s diagnoses by chance.

Leanne paid privately in August to visit a specialist lung doctor at The Nuffield hospital in Derby. She took one look at Leanne’s CT images and said that it looked very much like Lung Cancer.

She ordered further chest X-rays and CT scans and within just one short month Leanne had developed 2 litres of fluid on her left lung.

After a chest drain to aspire the fluid over a 5 day stay in hospital, the fluid appeared to be bloody & indeed tests on the fluid drained confirmed that Leanne had stage 4 non-small cell adenocarcinoma.

The specialist looking back on Leanne’s scans confirmed that in numerous scans dating back to 2016 Leanne had a small cancerous mass on her left lung which grew from a ‘petit poi’s size’ to the mass she has today.

The enlarged lymph nodes in the centre of her chest & the presumption that Leanne had a ‘non malignant auto immune disorder’ all along called Sarcoidosis, was actually a huge red herring.

As the cancer has been missed for so long, we have been told that Leanne’s condition is now terminal. Doctors have advised that It can be treated, but it can’t be cured.... Well, we’re remaining positive that she can and will beat this!

Leanne was determined to give our baby son the best chance at a good start in life that she could. Despite enduring agonising investigative treatment whilst pregnant including a chest drain, pleurodesis, daily blood thinning injections, numerous chest fluid aspirations, various hospital stays/ visits and all with very limited pain relief due to the baby being affected by all of this also, she managed to get our baby boy to 29 weeks gestation.

After becoming very poorly in early November, Leanne was admitted to hospital where oncologists, obstetricians and specialist lung doctors all decided that the best course of action was deliver the baby early to concentrate on Leanne’s treatment, which sadly hadn’t been working (most likely due to the growth hormones being produced by the pregnancy).

Our amazing little Miracle Beau Hudson Barrett was born via cesarean section at The Royal Derby Hospital on 08.11.18 at 14:03pm weighing 2lb 13oz.

Beau is currently in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit growing from strength to strength and improving every day & we’re amazed by his placidity & also by how well he’s come on in the week he’s been woth us. We pray that long may it continue.

Leanne however received the sad news this week that her cancer has rapidly progressed. It’s spread from her left lung/ pleura with small deposits now found on her brain, her liver and in her bones. Doctors advised us that they have NEVER seen a pregnant patient in this position before and they’ve certainly NEVER had a patient who’s cancer has moved onto the secondary mutation at first presentation. This cancer certainly is aggressive.

Obviously we have taken this news terribly but we are pulling together as a family & Leanne is still determined to beat this. It can be done!

We have been offered a new targeted cancer therapy treatment which Leanne started 15.11.18 and any additional help we can get her to aid her fight would be greatly appreciated.
