Story

The Lander4Uganda 2024 team are taking the Posho Challenge to raise money to build a dormitory in Bunjaako Secondary School, Uganda.

Sleeping in your classroom... every night..'

The female students at Bunjaako Secondary School currently finish a long day at school and then sleep in their classrooms. We want them to have a welcoming home, a permanent bed and a trunk for their belongings in a space away from the classroom. The new dormitory building will have rooms of bunkbeds along with a kitchen and a room for the 'house mama' to live. It will make such a difference to the students' lives. )Many of our students have experienced sleeping in their classrooms for one night during our school sleepovers - they will tell you that it is neither comfortable nor restful!)

So what is a 'Posho Challenge?'

For 24 hours (or 48 for any extra keen L4U team members) we will eat the simple diet of a Ugandan school child – this diet consists of posho and beans, 2 pieces of fruit and water... and nothing more.

Posho is maize meal which is mixed with water and cooked on a fire, or, in our case, in a microwave/ on the hob. It is flavoured with salt or sugar only. It has the consistency of wallpaper paste... with grit in.... it is also rather bland.. it is by no means posh nosh!

When does the fun begin??

This event will take place on Thursday 13th / Friday 14th June. Students will eat most of their posho at home but will also be provided with a 'delicious' school lunch of posho and beans cooked by the Lander4Uganda staff.

Haven't you been fundraising for Uganda for years?

Absolutely YES we have! Richard Lander School has a very longstanding relationship with the Molly and Paul Schools in Uganda. Since 2012, we have been helping to maintain and improve the school sites and buildings by sending a team of students (labour) and funds (for materials) to Uganda, each summer, to make improvements. This regular help is a lifeline for our Ugandan partner schools and brings great joy along with real, dependable, practical help. This year we will be working on three school sites with well over 1000 Ugandan children. Our L4U team departs on 2nd July, and is determined to make a difference! To do this we need as many donations as we can carry and as much money as we can possibly raise; hence this final fundraising posho push!

Can I join in?

YES!!! The Lander4Uganda team welcome all Richard Lander School students, staff, parents, carers, grandparents, supporters.. to join this on this challenge. We are more than happy to provide 'posho packs' for £5 per head - just email lander4uganda@richardlander.cornwall.sch.uk for more information. Or... just sponsor us : )

Why should I donate?

All children deserve a safe space to sleep at night and these Ugandan students do not have even that. This is a real opportunity for you to make a real difference to Ugandan children whilst also empowering Cornish students - double win! Lander4Uganda have no admin costs - every penny which is raised goes directly to our Ugandan partner schools and we oversee the distribution of all funds. Lander4Uganda also keep a blog where you will be able to see how the money is spent. True accountability - triple win!
