Story
What I want: Stop Press! Please help!
I would like your “hard earned” cash to raise funds two causes I passionately support; provide adults with learning difficulties with better knowledge and practical experience to make healthy eating choices.
I have been working with people with learning disabilities (aka intellectual impairment) for several years. As a community they are invisible and underrepresented and there is no media coverage around culinary skills for people who fall within this group. I would like to provide this community with invaluable information about nutrition along with a platform to explore healthy options enabling them to make good food choices and build their confidence through practical experience.
I am currently in my final year of training to be a health psychologist and run workshops to engage adults with learning disabilities by educating them on options available around eating healthily. However, getting personal support with cooking can be difficult. To bridge this gap, I would like to create cooking videos and pictorial cookbooks and distribute these through the world of YouTube and other resources. This will provide accessible resources and independence in the kitchen for individuals who are committed to improving their eating habits.
I have undertaken independent research to identify the need for this and have discovered there is an interest. I am collaborating with staff and service users of the media centre at my organisation (Yarrow Housing) to establish and implement this project. We require funds to hire a kitchen for cooking sessions, to make videos and easy read recipes, which I am hoping to raise through you parting with your wonga!
What I will do for your “hard earned” cash:
As a reward for your “hard earned” cash I intend to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa in January 2018. This will be a gruelling task but with your support and my eye on your dough, I will complete this challenge so I can reward the charities I support.
My gratitude:
Thank you for taking your time to read this and I would be grateful for any amount you are able to donate.

7 years agoSo we made it to the peak around 7.40am local time (I'm on the far right in black with white ski gloves, and my hair didn't go white, it just got frozen) on our 7th day of trekking. Took us over 8 hours to pull it off and we spent a lot of time pushing each other for that final climb up in breathless voices. Our guides sang to us at the altitude to keep us going, not sure how they pulled that off but it was immensely powerful. Safe to say I won't be forgetting this, or them, or your support any time soon. Kept me moving. Thank you :)

7 years agoHi all! Two main updates! I have decided to now focus my efforts going forward on my health promotion work. To this end I have been working within my team at Yarrow to look at ways staff can be supported to promote healthier living by their clients, as this can be a nuanced and delicate process. We have also been looking at running workshops with more services. Secondly, I am in Moshi! We arrived today in Tanzania and did a gentle hike near Mt Neru to get an idea of the terrain and stretch our legs. :)

7 years agoSo good news! We started a cooking taster and the guys made some healthy flapjacks. We all enjoyed it and shared with other people visiting the centre. Everyone helped out and it tasted really good! That brings me to the next news, we were able to win a small grant to run cooking sessions, for a few weeks. We'll be doing this and refreshing people on why healthy eating is important alongside it but there's nothing like experiencing it for yourself. So people will have more time to perfect their skills for the camera ;)
