Story

Mason Palmer, now aged 8 was born with Upper limb transverse arrest. A condition whereby he was born with only one hand. Mason and his family have been given the opportunity have fitted a multi-grip bionic hand that works off the muscles in the wrist. The bionic hand is unfortunately not free on the NHS and costs privately £12,500.

I have asked Mason's mum Louise to tell us Mason's story.

“It was at a private gender scan that we were told that it looked like our gorgeous little boy was missing his left hand, this was later confirmed at the fetal medicine unit at Liverpool women’s hospital.”

“I can’t describe the shock of this and the feeling of total despair. My head swam with so much worry and uncertainty of how his life would look, why my gorgeous little boy? I didn’t need to worry, Mason is absolutely amazing and he finds a way to do pretty much everything. He is loved by everyone that meets him and is such a character, I’m beyond proud every day that I get to be his mum.”

“He loves football, karate and wants to start rugby too. He will literally try anything. Obviously his life is full of challenges that most children and parents don’t have to experience and we have to find ways to adapt. Every day tasks are not so simple for Mason as they are for people with 2 hands. Dressing, riding a bike and scooter, playing an instrument, opening a bag of crisps, cutting his food, tying his shoelaces, playing his computer games, the list really is endless but my god does my boy try and he makes me unbelievably proud every day. He does get upset at times and I can understand that but it’s beyond heartbreaking to hear him say he’d love to have two hands. The first time he asked when his other hand was going to grow was like I’d been punched in the stomach but I just reassured him that he can do everything anyone ends can.”

“He’s never been interested in the prosthetics that are offer from the NHS as they are just cosmetic, they don’t offer any real use. We don’t need him to look like he has 2 hands cos that’s not our Mason, he needs functionality.”

“We were recently invited to an open bionics hero arm experience day. The hero arm is a lightweight multi-grip bionic arm for adults and children. This arm is amazing and Mason loved it. It will enable him to do things he just can’t do now. His face when testing out the arm was priceless. I vowed there and then I’d do whatever it takes to get him that arm.”
