Story
The ABSAR Barbuda Relief Fund
Our sister island, Barbdua, was hit by the eye of the category 5 hurricane Irma on September 6th and suffered catastrophic damage. People are homeless with nothing left except the clothes they stand in and Barbuda has lost 98% of its infrastructure.
ABSAR (Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue) donated most of its medical supplies to Barbuda, despite being itself a donation-based, registered non-profit organisation. It has now started this Barbuda Relief Fund, aiming to continue to provide resources to rebuild the island. Funds will be invested in medical supplies, re-establishing communication with the island and providing emergency responses as well as helping with day to day needs.
I've worked with ABSAR for a number of years and have seen first hand the physical and emotional dedication of the volunteers, as well as the trust local people have in them. All funds raised will be used to help those affected by the hurricane to help rebuild their shattered lives.
The list of items needed is endless. ABSAR’s focus going forward is to acquire communication and medical equipment so that people can return to the island to start cleaning up and rebuilding. Equipment needs range from antennas, repeaters, satellite telephones and radios to a temporary hospital unit, medical equipment and basic medical supplies. We are currently working in conjunction with the government of Antigua and Barbuda to implement an effective plan together in order to ensure quality medical care during this next phase of operations.
To rebuild we will also need items such as Generators, Tents, Dried/canned food, Water purifiers, Water treatment tablets, Water pumps, Buckets, Containers for storage, Toiletries, Bedding, Kitchen and cooking items, Building Material Steel, Lumber, Plywood,Roofing material, Tarpaulin, Windows,Doors,Nails (assorted),Screws (assorted), Hammers, Screw drivers,Industry-Fishing pot wires, Buoys
Any amount you can donate will make a difference, every dollar counts so thankyou.
