Story

Those who know me are aware that my two passions in life are running and my gorgeous rescue Lurcher, Dan.

I am about to turn 50 and rather than dwell on the fact that I am getting older, I have decided to challenge myself in my 50th year by running Brighton marathon on 7th April and Goring Gap 52k ultra marathon on 19th May. Brighton will be my second marathon and Goring Gap will be my first (and quite possibly only!) ultra marathon. I would like to use this opportunity to raise some much needed funds for the amazing rescue that I rehomed my beloved Lurcher from back in 2015 when he was 5 months old.

Dan had been dumped as a puppy and was picked up as a stray at only 4 months old. He was taken in by the wonderful volunteers at EGLR and looked after in a foster home until I had the privilege of being able to rehome him from them shortly afterwards. Dan is the most amazing dog and makes me smile every day and I am so grateful that that he is part of my life. I am however very aware that without the work of rescues like EGLR, I would not have had the chance to share my life with him.

EGLR was set up by Pip Singleton approximately 35 years ago when she started bringing Greyhounds and Lurchers into her home in an attempt to stop them being destroyed. The rescue still operates as a foster based rescue with foster homes up and down the country.

Although over the years the rescue has grown in size, it is still run by a handful of volunteers and foster homes that look after and raise funds for the many dogs being cared for at any one time. The majority of the dogs arrive with little or no background. All of them need love and attention, however, far too many need to be nursed back to health or be rehabilitated to help them overcome physical or mental scars.

All dogs brought into the rescue are carefully assessed and if need be, rehabilitated. to prepare them to be rehomed. The dogs are neutered where possible and given full veterinary treatment. Lurchers and Greyhounds are sadly often victims of cruelty, neglect and abandonment and EGLR frequently has a list of dogs waiting to come into foster care with priority being given to any dog whose life is threatened. Many of the dogs are not used to living indoors as they have spent their whole lives in sheds, kennels or outside.

EGLR receives no government funding and relies on donations from its supporters to enable it to continue with its work in supporting Greyhounds and Lurchers in need.

I am hoping to raise an much money as possibly to help EGLR with their amazing and incredibly worthwhile work and would be very grateful for any support that you would like to give.

Thank you x.
