Story
Last summer my sister, Karen Thomas sadly passed away.
Between 10-11th June, myself and seven of Karen's friends are aiming to summit Ben
Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hrs in her memory. We decided we wanted to do something special to remember her and raise money for the charities close to her heart.
We're raising money for the Back up Trust and East Anglia Children's Hospice. Here's a little bit more about why these are the chosen charities and the work Karen did with them.
EACH
Karen approached East Anglia Children's Hospice at Milton Cambridgeshire to volunteer there, and the staff at the hospice were so impressed with her work, they offered her a job, as a Physiotherapist.
Karen re-established the hydrotherapy service at the Milton hospice after a gap, when the last physio left. She helped to put systems in place to ensure it was well run. She trained staff to support this, and she helped train up the physiotherapist they recruited to take Karen s place. Karen loved working with the children in the pool, and they loved her. She reassured them, and she made them feel safe. EACH carry out wonderful work supporting children and their families with life threatening conditions across East Anglia.
BACK UP TRUST
Back up help people and their families to rebuild their independence after a devastating spinal cord injury. Karen volunteered on different courses that the Trust run to support people with spinal cord injuries in her role as a Physiotherapist. The Back Up Trust have a buddy system on their courses, where those volunteering buddy up with someone with spinal cord injuries.
She raised vital funds for the Back Up Trust and raised awareness of the challenges that people with Spinal Cord injuries face, on a day to day basis. Karen felt passionately about adults with special needs and the challenges they faced. Please support the Back Up Trust and the wonderful work they do.
