Story
I'm raising £2000 for a youth club project.
My son found his tribe 2 years ago…..
……after being kicked out of many other child activity groups such as karate and dancing (or rather me being politely asked to remove him).
On a Friday night, come rain or shine, he was with other youths with Down Syndrome and other LD, and loved nothing more than games, playing music, baking cookies, getting down with the groove, and generally having a wonderful time (with parents in the parents room keeping an occasional eye out and supporting the youth workers).
That came to a dramatic end in July as the funding ran out, and the charity who were running it couldn’t carry it on, nor look for additional funding.
The teens were all devastated – ‘nothing to do’ is often exacerbated by LD parameters.
As has been my experience many times over the past 13 years, the parents have all stepped up to the mark. We have set up a new charity to continue to run the youth group. We are all on the committee in some form or another.
We have to fundraise!! There are set up costs of insurance, DBS checks, safeguarding training etc that all needs to be paid for, plus ongoing costs of activities, snacks/drinks, and external trips to promote independence skills etc.
So, my fundraising initiative is a Sponsored walk.
Me being me, it’s not a sponsored walk around the park – it’s a darn long one…..in fact it’s 874 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats (virtually).
So If you’ve got a spare £5, I would love you to sponsor me

1 month agoI've now completed 331 miles, and I have 543 left to walk on the virtual walk. In real life my walks this month have taken me around Blackpool to see the lights and the ballroom, Whitley Bay to see Hadrians Wall and Segedunum Roman Fort. The teens are loving the new activities, and we have recently done cookery skills such as pizza/cookies/flapjack making, physical activities such as silent disco/indoor basketball, handwriting/reading/maths skills through Halloween bingo/card making, and turn taking through party games.
