Story
The struggle of Young Girls in Nepal
In Nepal the practice of Chhaupadi (illegal since 2005) still occurs in many rural areas. During their menstrual period girls are not allowed to take part in religious activities, to touch men and are banished from their home to live in a shed for 4 days or longer. It is believed they will otherwise bring their family bad luck or ill health. Often they do not have access to sanitary products which can lead to the use of dirty rags. They also might not have access to running water, a combination that can lead to infections and disease.
During their time at the hut they often are not supplied with nutritious food. This old tradition has even led to the death of young girls while they are still teenagers.
A group of girls from VSN school have been teaching local girls about menstruation and correct hygiene. They are also raising money for sanitary products and hygiene kits for free distribution to the local community.
Any donations will go towards the purchasing of these products.
Nepal is one of the least‐developed countries in the world. Over half the population live under the international poverty line, and thousands of children die every year due to malnutrition and diseases. Poverty, illiteracy, gender inequality and poor education affect many families.
Nepal England Education Support (known as NEES) is a small charity set up to support one particular community in Nepal - specifically helping the local school to support children who otherwise would not receive an education. With our sponsors help we are providing a safe, secure and spacious school and enabling some of the world’s poorest children to receive a high standard of education.
If you are interesting in getting involved with supporting the children at Vinayak School in Bhaktapur, please contact Judith on Judithmilne3@gmail.com I would love to tell you more.
