John o' Groats - Lands End ·Sports

Story

On the 23rd April I will be setting off from John O' Groats, to attempt at being the first able bodied person to travel from the most northern part of Scotland to the most southern part of England, John O' Groats to Lands end in a wheelchair.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Almost 2 years ago my bestfriend had a motorbike accident that changed his life forever. Medically he was told that he would never walk again, the damage was so severe. His response to the news is why I'm here now writing my story, to share with you all on what has come of it...

From his hospital bed he called to say that he would never walk again, but rather than accept his fate, he wished to prove the odds wrong and inspire others to do so. I have found from this that we all have the power to determine our futures in which ever way we wish them to be.

Last September, 1 Year after Ben's accident, Ben and I completed the Berlin Marathon together. Instead of running, I went alongside him in a wheelchair to show my support. Spending so much time in the chair exposed me to some of the harsh realities Ben and so many others face every day.

Like Ben, I have faced my own personal battles. I almost lost my life to depression, contemplating suicide and I have come out the other side realising that life is infact a gift. This is what bonded Ben and I even more, we have a mutual understanding of how lucky we are to still be here after facing major hurdles in our lives.

Everyday is a blessing and should be for any living human. Unfortunately it's not for so many, and this is something I wish to change. Through my own journey I have learnt a lot and wish to showcase that no matter the adversities we face, to remind people the capabilities and strength we personally have to overcome it.

This challenge is so poignant because of the charities that I have selected and the fundamental message behind it. There will be times when even the mentally and physically strong will struggle and that is OKAY, the important thing is to enable every individual to see the positives of the adversity they face, rather than the restriction they see.

As someone who struggles mentally, this challenge leaves me feeling extremely vulnerable which gives me more drive to do this. Having only used a wheelchair for a short while I am completely out of my comfort zone which adds to the hurdles I will face mentally and physically.

I hope that every day I achieve on this challenge will inspire at least 1 person to realise the strength that they have within themselves. That even when limitations appear in front of them, they will have the power to overcome these.
