Story
Matthew and Lucy Johnston are twins, the most adorable, loving, happiest twins you'll ever meet. Six months ago our lives were turned upside down after receiving the devastating news that they both have the brain damage condition known as cerebral palsy. Lucy has been diagnosed with dystonia and quadriplegia (all four limbs are affected) and Matthew with spastic diplegia (affecting both of his legs). Both have developmental delay in gross motor skills and Lucy is non verbal and cannot even sit up. We learnt of the amazing operation that could transform their little lives through consultants, newspaper articles and media coverage and knew we had to get it for them both. SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) is a neurosurgical procedure designed to reduce spasticity (a tightness of the muscles) in the legs and ankles in children with cerebral palsy. This operation will also relieve the pain that Lucy especially suffers with. Previously only done in the USA, this revolutionary operation is now being offered to selective patients in UK based hospitals... but at a price (selective being that the child must pass an assessment to know the operation is suitable). Ranging between £40,000 and £50,000 per operation plus intensive therapy for up to two years after, this amazing opportunity can only be met with your help. We are determined our babies will walk unaided by the time they are 5 years old and lead their life with other children as mainstream as possible and for that we are asking for your help. Thank you in advance from the bottom of our hearts
