    Story

I was told about Georgy and his family in October 2021 by a friend and was directed to the Facebook page 'Georgy's Fight'. After reading it's contents and being horrified at what the family had been through I felt compelled to help. At the time of diagnosis Georgy was only 8 years old, and was told he had a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma.

In May of 2018 he started his chemotherapy and had 15 rounds up until March 2019, so that the tumour located in his arm and shoulder could be shrunk. This also coincided with 35 rounds of radiotherapy. It was decided in December of 2018 that it would be best to remove part of Georgy's shoulder and his humerus bone (this is the bone in the upper arm), replacing it with a titanium prosthetic to try and stop the potential spread of anymore cancerous cells. This procedure was undertaken at Birmingham Orthopaedic Hospital. Amazingly Georgy rang the end of treatment bell in March 2019!!!

Unfortunately in March 2020 Georgy started to get headaches, and in April of that year was sent for an MRI scan that revealed the cancer had returned but this time in Georgys left nasopharynx (this is the upper part of the throat behind the nose).

The cancer had also eaten away some of his cheekbone, and had started to grow into the base of his skull. In hospital Georgy had a Hickman Line inserted, he then had to endure a biopsy procedure where they were told there was a high chance that Georgy could lose his sight, have a stroke, or both. Thankfully none of this happened.

Chemotherapy was then started again with Georgy undergoing another gruelling 6 rounds but this time in Manchester. This left him in intensive care with neutropenic sepsis because of his compromised immune system, which is a result of the treatment he underwent. The consultant then informed the family just before his 7th round of chemo was due to start that it wasn't possible because his body just wouldn't be able to take anymore.

As you can imagine this was a huge blow for Georgy and his family, with one of the nurses even saying to them "go home and make some memories". Although i'm sure this was a well meant comment, this was not what they or any other parent would want to hear.

Georgy's parents (Helen and Richard) refused to just sit by and wait for the unthinkable to happen. They started to research alternative treatments. After weeks and months of research, they came across NK cell therapy, which isn't available on the NHS.

So what is NK cell therapy? It involves taking bloods that are then sent to be tested in a specialist laboratory in Greece. After testing has been concluded it gives a clear indication of any concentrations of cancerous cells and their location. A number of different treatments are then administered which are explained below.

Georgy then travelled to Thailand in May 2021 with his Mum and Dad, and underwent his initial NK cell therapy. The Doctors worked hard to support Georgy's immune system with light and oxygen therapy, infusions of holistic, non invasive substances along with an IV laser bed and intra muscluar injections for three weeks, so he would be as strong as possible going into the actual treatment itself.

Week four saw two separate infusions of healthy cells, one on a Monday and one on a Thursday. This procedure has to be meticulous or the infusion will just not work. The total number of cells infused on this first visit were 2.4 billion.

After very positive results, the family then travelled to Thailand again in October 2021. Georgy is now 12 years old. The process was repeated, with the only difference being that 4 billion cells were infused this time.

The cost of this treatment is huge with the family having already raised over £250,000, which has now been spent. They're unfortunately in a position where they have to raise more funds for further trips - the next one being in January of 2022.

As a parent of three wonderful children myself, I honestly cannot begin to comprehend what they're all going through, and as previously mentioned I felt compelled to help.

It has been a difficult couple of years for us all, but imagine going through all the struggles that we have been through to also watch one of your very young children suffer horrendously, battling Cancer...........

Georgy has been ill for the last 4 years. He is only 12 years old and has therefore spent a third of his young life battling Cancer. Through these four years Georgy has displayed a warrior's spirit. He has fought physical and mental adversity, whilst managing to maintain an optimistic spirit. What an incredible young man. A lot can be learnt from Georgy.

So what do I plan to do to raise money for such a great cause?

I will be running a marathon a month starting in January 2022 and continuing through until May 2022, then taking on the challenge of running an ultra marathon in June 2022.

The ultra marathon will start at Carlisle and finish in Newcastle-upon-Tyne covering a distance of 70 miles in one day. I'm currently very unfit and am running my first marathon in 6 weeks. This will be a huge task for me to complete. Please give generously!
