    Story

Introduction - Reading for the hills

Today’s readers are indeed tomorrow’s leaders, however far too many children have never owned an individual copy of a reading book nor developed the zest for books and their contents.

This project seeks on an annual basis to fund two primary or junior schools with reading books and educational resources. Each year one rural and one cooperate area school will be selected. Contributor’s choices will influence the 2nd 2017 and next year’s selected schools. As a project requirement, school are expected to evaluate the impact the resources have on learning and teaching at the end of the first year after delivery. We hope we can count on your support.

    1st 2017 Focus School

Our first school of focus is Birnamwood Primary, in Buff Bay Valley, Portland. The Principal, Mrs Michelle Brimm, is keen to see her students succeed, and is fortunate to be working with children who are really keen to do just so. The school’s backdrop, the beautiful Blue Mountains, is not remotely akin to the quality of reading and library resources available to students. We are keen to support the school in changing that situation this year. The school’s library is currently in ruins and they are looking to develop their reading and maths programme with the aid of the resources we offer. We are aiming to raise £1000 to cover the resources needed and shipping cost. Please join us in supporting the students of Birnamwood Primary School to embrace their motto, "it can be done", by providing them with fantastic new reading and educational resources.

How will the money raised be used?

Participating schools will select reading, and classroom resources from www.thereadingtroupe.com. After Just Giving admin fees, a maximum of 5% per school of the donated funds will be allocated to packaging and shipment of the books and resources. The remaining donations will be shared equally between the benefiting schools for 2017.

    Our Contributions

The schools will receive additional free books from The Reading Troupe. Resource donations above £100 per school will be supplemented by an extra 10% of free books; above the value of £250, an extra 30% of free book and above £600, an extra 60% of free books, potentially providing at least £960 worth of books for £600 donated per school.

    How is the project evaluated?

To ensure our aims are being achieved, participating schools have been asked to do the following:
    • Provide feedback, photos and a short video message from the school within 2 weeks of the receiving the books and resources
    • Provide an update at the end of the academic year to inform us on progress
    • Where a specific curriculum area is being challenged and specific resources provided to support these, an agreed evaluation of the impact of the resources

A very proud Jamaican! I was born and completed education up to AS ‘Level in Jamaica and educated beyond in the UK. I am passionate about learning and reading; as a teacher and Director of Troupe Education Ltd, I seek ways of engaging others to read and embrace its benefits.
