Story
Come September the 9th , I’ll be attempting to complete the world-famous Ironman Wales route. This involves a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, topped off by a full marathon.
Famous for its chilling waters, gruelling hills and typically unpredictable Welsh weather, this challenge has it all; not to mention I’m coming from a bodybuilding and rugby background and weighing in a light 105kgs.
For those who aren’t aware, Get the Boys a Lift are a Pembrokeshire based non-for-profit organisation which funds local and national mental health projects, as well as sign posting young people to services available and reaching out for help when it comes to mental health.
Over the last 2 years, Get the Boys a Lift have funded close to £12,000 and provided to local and national causes including Mind, PAPYRUS (prevention of youth suicide) the VC Gallery and The DPJ Foundation. As well as this come September they are hoping to continue their outreach programme which gets young people, thinking, involved and engaged in the services available to them, as well as their support network around them and managing their own headspace.
During their most recent trip around the U.K, Get the Boys a Lift helped successfully signpost 8 young people to services available and receive the help they needed. They have also been acknowledged by the charities and thanked for their continuous work in signposting people to reach out and get help. As they say, “you don’t have to know someone to give them a lift” is reflected through their commitment to bring change to our community and change perceptions about mental health across Wales and beyond.
