Story
There are countless people who made a huge difference to Paul's life. Attending the many clubs he was part of was always a highlight of his week. Paul looked forward to the engaging and interactive activities that were planned for every session and cherished the moments he spent there with his dear friends. It is because of these that Paul led such a happy and fulfilling life. We will be forever grateful for the support, care and friendship that everyone provided- not just for Paul but for the whole family too. We know that, like us, you will hold the memory of Paul in a special place in your hearts.
Each and every one of the volunteers’ tireless efforts, positivity and enthusiasm are second to none. Paul loved the Kites Club on a Thursday evening- especially the discos! He always looked forward to the annual events that Mencap held and loved the quizzes.
As a family, we feel a very strong connection to the two particular clubs that Paul was part of for many years (since his 20’s): clubs that were fundamental in shaping Paul's life.
ROYAD
ROYAD started in 1994 under the name ‘Reach Out Club’ (ROC) with just 11 members. It has now expanded to almost 40, all of whom have a mild learning disability and are able-bodied. There is no regular external funding and so it is run by parent volunteers with a few paid tutors for specialist activities such as drama and dancing. When it achieved charitable status, its name was changed to ROYAD (Reaching Out to Youth and Adult Disabilities).
The Starling Family has been involved with ROYAD since its conception. Paul became a member with his father Tony, who many of you will remember fondly, as a Trustee and Team Leader for Sports. Tony also set up Headley House, the supported living home where Paul and other ROYAD members were able to live in sheltered, independent flats.
Over the course of ROYAD’s 26-year history it has organised a wide range of activities for its members including: ten pin bowling, drama, swimming, disco nights, day trips and annual holidays and lifelong learning courses. Paul took part in almost all the ROYAD activities. He especially enjoyed the Sunday Drama and performing in the annual shows.
Puffins Club
The Puffins Club, a sports group for disabled people, has been in existence for over 30 years. Paul was a member for 26 years. He enjoyed playing bowls, boccia and swimming at the Epsom Rainbow Centre on a Monday evening, and used to take part in bowls competitions. He always looked forward to the yearly trips to Hayling Island and made so many lifelong friends during his many years at the club.
Both ROYAD and Puffins helped Paul to gain confidence, overcome life’s obstacles, share new experiences and seize opportunities that may otherwise not have been accessible to him. The money raised in Paul's memory will be split between ROYAD and Puffins, but please indicate if you would like your donation to go specifically to one of these clubs.
Thank you for your donations. We look forward to sharing our memories and celebrating Paul's life with you at a memorial service when times allow.

We only met Paul on a few occasions but he came across as a fun loving person and a perfect gentleman. We know he is already much missed by his family and friends.
