Story

Our tiny, gorgeous daughter Hope was born sleeping on Saturday 6th August 2016 with blonde hair and her Daddy’s nose. She was beautiful and perfect.

Finding out I was pregnant for the first time was a mixture of absolute joy and happiness, as well as shock and disbelief! Never once did I think that our happy story would have a heartbreaking ending.

From our 12 week appointment we had a variety of scans and tests, and at 21 weeks gestation, Hope was diagnosed with a rare genetic chromosome disorder called Triploidy, meaning she was not compatible with life outside the womb.

Sadly in the UK one in every 200 births ends in a stillbirth. Eleven babies are stillborn every day, making it 15 times more common than sudden infant death syndrome (also know as cot death). More than 40,000 women will be told there is a risk their baby has a severe or fatal condition and 1in 4 women suffer a miscarriage.

During my time at St Helier I discussed with my bereavement midwife, that I wanted to help make positive changes to the hospital and help other families who suffer the loss of a baby. We discussed everything I thought needed to change and now I am working to make this happen.

WHY WE ARE RAISING MONEY...

Each hospital should Ideally have at least one dedicated bereavement room/suite, vital equipment and information packs needed.

The Bereavement Room & Equipment - St Helier Hospital

The room is currently on the labour ward and will remain in the same place. This is to ensure that the mother receives continuous care and support during labour and after birth. The new room will be redecorated & equipped with a low lighting, bed, a bed chair, recliner, en-suite bathroom and small kitchenette area. This is to enable parents to spend time in the room with their baby/babies and any visitors, if they would like to do so. A cot or suitable sized basket will also be available for the baby. A cooling facility will be fitted in the bereavement room, so that parents have easy access to their baby and do not need to go to the mortuary if they would like to see and spend time with their baby.

Bereavement Information Packs

At this devastating time there are lots of questions and decisions to make, and it's important that each family have everything they need to know. We are aiming to supply every bereaved family with a guide of practical information, things to expect and useful contacts unique St Helier and Epsom Hospitals.

When a woman loses a baby during pregnancy, at the time of birth or shortly after it is very traumatic experience, not just for the mother but her partner and others close to them. Please help us to support other bereaved families in their devastating and heartbreaking time and break the silence in stillborn and baby loss.
