Hero menswear are trying to help raise awareness in the alarming rise in mental health issues affecting males today. Men are often expected to be the breadwinners and to be strong, dominant and in control. While these aren’t inherently bad things, they can make it harder for men to reach out for help and open up. Men may also be more likely to use potentially harmful coping methods such as drugs or alcohol and less likely to talk to family or friends about their mental health.

We at Hero want to help to raise awareness of these issues and have developed a clothing brand to help raise funding for charities such as MIND, for every item purchased £1 per item will be pooled and disbursed to help these charities provide the resources needed to combat this ever growing issue.

Some facts about male mental health issues:

Around three quarters of suicides that occur are men.

Suicide is the largest cause of death in men under 50.

Men are less likely to access psychological therapies than women.

87% of rough sleepers are men.

Men are nearly three times as likely as women to become dependent on alcohol and three times as likely to report frequent drug abuse.

Men are more likely to be compulsorily detained (or ‘sectioned’) for treatment than women.

Men report lower levels of life satisfaction than women, according to the government’s national wellbeing survey.

Men are more likely to be victims of violent crime (1.5 more likely than women).

Men make up the vast majority of the prison population. There are high rates of mental health problems and increased rates of self-harm in prisons.

Just 36% of all NHS referrals for psychological therapies are for men. 52% of men would be concerned about taking time off of work for mental health related reasons, while 46% would feel embarrassed or ashamed to tell their employer.

We're raising as much as we can to help small groups such as Andy's Man Club who are a men's suicide prevention charity, offering free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups across the United Kingdom and online
