Story

Lalitas Wardrobe was born from a love of India and it's incredible textiles, a celebration of my mixed heritage in culture, colour and pattern. We re-purpose forgotten saris into contemporary clothing for the massive. With a deep mission to connect international cultures though the brand, the clothing has been worn by people from all over the world. Through Lalitas Wardrobe so much community has been found, crossing cultures in celebration of one off, joyful, beautiful garments appreciated by a hugely diverse audience - people young and old. In a step to unify and empower Indian people in the work place we push the culture toward fairer wages, more respect for workers and kindness for all of our tailors.
BUT Lalitas Wardrobe has suffered hardship this year. The tailors we had been working with dropped us, with no explanation, and left me with no collection this summer, this resulted not being able to work at larger scale festivals outside of Norfolk as well as serve Norwich and our beloved local fans too. My heart broken, feeling the demand and not being able to meet it time and time again with my regular customers. We were in the process of designing our own block prints for dungarees when the production stopped, a massive blow for myself and the local illustrator I was in collaboration with -SORRY TRISH!
I have a huge opportunity to share my creations with Secret Paradise at Glastonbury, Shambala and bigger scale festivals in 2024. The demand is high for my wonderful clothing and yet I can not produce anything new from the other side of the world without being there. I will be heading to India in November to seek a co-operative working sustainibly and ethically, at present I do not have enough money to be there for that time AND produce a collection. In a sea of fast fashion and millions of tailors spread out in this huge country its a daunting task and one I can not take on without funds. I have to pay for my studio and website whilst I am away too.
We also donate a % of sales to help a project in Maharastra, which helps to feed and educate some of India's poorest families. I would love to be able to visit the project in this trip. I will head to Jaipur and seek block printers to produce bespoke designs on organic cotton and hemp (hopefully!), collect beautiful old silk saris for new designs and some of the older classic cuts too!
I want to thank everyone who has supported my business over the last 4 yrs. It was a crazy time to start just as the pandemic arrived, it's been a huge struggle and I have not been able to return home to India for a long time now, this is going to be a special trip - whatever the outcome!
