Story

Hastings Supports Refugees is a grassroots community group made up of local people who can't sit by and do nothing in the face of the awful conditions and treatment faced by refugees, people seeking asylum and migrants in camps in Europe and beyond, and increasingly here in the UK, as they seek safety and a better life. We raise funds to support organisations working on the ground, and raise awareness of the challenges people face.

Most recently we've created a Beach Response Team, to provide immediate humanitarian aid to people arriving on nearby beaches in small boats, or who are brought in by the wonderful RNLI. After hours at sea, some dry clothes, a hot drink and a friendly face can make all the difference.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our Crowdfunder so far - we've been bowled over by your generosity.

We are going to keep raising funds, and continue showing humanity and compassion to all those seeking safety.

Thank you again

---------------------------------

In Hastings we are often at the forefront of new refugee arrivals to the UK; as a dispersal area for asylum seekers, as part of the Syrian Vulnerable Person's Resettlement Programme and by sea as desperate people attempt the dangerous Channel crossing in small boats. We are proud that the town is welcoming to refugees, asylum seekers, and other communities and proactive towards their needs.

Hastings is also part of the national City of Sanctuary network, and we come under the umbrella of Hastings Community of Sanctuary, who support projects in the town and campaign on key national and regional issues - including opposing the new Nationality & Borders Bill and the housing of people seeking asylum at Napier Barracks in Folkestone. Hastings Community of Sanctuary is a constituted voluntary group, but neither it nor Hastings Supports Refugees, are registered charities.
